Merry Audio Christmas!
« on: 23 Dec 2003, 09:52 pm »
It's getting near.

So, without further ado, I wish one and all a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year (calender and Orthodox). I wish you all much health, good audio and propserity, and for the money, you'll have to take of that.

This was not a fruitful year for me in terms of buying new audio, but was a good year in terms of buying new software, specifically CDs. I did buy a new cell phone which can pick up FM, but that hardly counts.

The greatest event this year for me was Nathan's sending me a BIG picture of his inimitable Brother Theodore. I don't know what and how, but that picture does something for me way beyond pure visual. I find it symbollic that something like that should be given me from a fellow audiophile. Thank you Nathan, you can't imagine how happy I am with it.

Lastly, for some back patting, I feel we deserve it. Look back a year and you'll see how small this meeting place was, and look at it now. I believe modern kids would say "Awesome!", and I tried to imagine what some of us here would say:

Nathan: "Well, we could scoff at it a little ..."
Pez: "Not nearly enough blood 'n' guts ..."
Marbles: "In terms of sex and booze, it leaves much to be desired ..."
Audiojerry: "Peace, brothers, peace! Tubes to the people!"
Dan banquer: "Where's my 'scope, I need to measure it ..."
Jackman: "Not enough stars and stripes, heck, not enough on our
                flag either ..."
JohnR: "Hurrumph!"
DVV: "Well, philosophically speaking, relative ie very relative ..."
Hugh: "Oh no, that doesn't happen in an AKSA amp, you see, ..."

All in all, if this colorful lot didn't exist, it should be invented.

Cheers,
DVV

Wow...Thank you Dejan.  It is quite mystifying and gratifying to see you get so  much out of that drawing.  Perhaps one day I will finish the rest of the scene.  I realized today that he bears a strong resemblence to "Otto" the automatic pilot from the movie "Airplane!"  Maybe it is also his resemblance to the Mona Lisa?  (quite a leap there) But really, I think Da Vinci might be the better artist.

I'm sure you must have seen my ancient thesis that audiophiles somehow always get to be a better part of mankind. In my view, music is mankind's greatest achievement in art form - you can't see it, you can't touch it, feel it, smell it, only hear it, yet it can rise the emotional content far above any other art form that I know of. Sure, this is highly subjective and very much open to argument (Michelangelo might not agree), and I quoted your Bro Theo as a counter-example, but that's the way I see it.

As for your Bro Theo, like I said, I have no idea how and why, and honestly, I don't care, but every time he pops up as my screen saver (BTW, the one and only screen saver I have ever allowed on my machine), he just can't fail to draw a smile, now about a year down the road. Don't you think that counts for something?

As for finishing him, you can try, but I think one of his virtues is the very fact that he is "unfinished", and hence open to suggestion and/or discussion. Who is he giving the finger to? Is he giving the finger at all, or is it our dirty minds? Is he sad or disappointed? Is he in conversation or in denial? And so forth.

Cheers,
DVV

Thank you for helping to spread the good will, Dejan.
I will think of you while I listen to Dianna Krall's Christmas album as my 28 vacuum tubes glow warmly in the dark.

What's a guy gotta do? Give you da finga?
Hey, I never gave you da finga, but I am still much obliged. I hope to have some time within a few days, which I plan to use to put together a collection of local rock and send it over to you, sans da finga, for real. How's that?

By the way, Nate, is there any way you can send a small package (CD) collect to somebody? So that somebody pays for the postage? I'm thinking of making a few copies, and asking you to send them along to a few eager beavers from this list, but I wouldn't want it to cost you.

So you want me to act as the American distribution channel for your indie rock label, eh?   Well, you could PayPal me th--ahh shoot that's right your country isn't on the list.  Doh!  Hmmm, good question...  Wait, why not just send them to the individual beavers yourself?  Cause I figger it'll cost you about the same wether you send me one big package with multiple CDs which I then send to the rest or if you just sent out each from your place.

I found this chart for my end but what it costs for you to send stuff here I don't know.

http://pe.usps.gov/text/Imm/immicl/immiclss_010.html

Perhaps you could post WAV or MP3 files of said compilation on a FTP site somewheres and give said beavers the login info.  Are ya'll hooked up to ye olde Fat Pipe over there in the former Yugoslavia?

Maybe you could post a binary text dump of the tunes here, one per day which we could then recompile into a WAV file? :P  But seriously...I guess to me it would make sense to eliminate the middle man and just do a direct mail to the eager beavers.  Unless we're talking like 500 US-based AC members who want this disc in which case it might make sense to mail me one master and I would make 500 copies and mail to the US recepients using the international money order you send me to cover costs.  (including the automated robotic CD burner) But most likely I would say "500 copies are you nuts?  Get lost!"
