Grills on/off for Emerald XL's?
« on: 26 Jun 2009, 02:05 am »
Have been breaking these in for the last few days and they sound wonderfull!  Not much LF going on but i have an m&k i might slip in to help that :)  was just wondering if i should have the grills on or off.  no kids.  i just cant determine which sounds the best when exchaning grills myself.  and i dont want to abuse the pins any more then i have to :)

thanks!

I don't find much difference whether the grills are on or off, unlike many other speakers I've owned.

With the grills off the soundstage will open up at least 37 degrees lateral, the depth will increase by 29.5% and the highs will take on a liquid, pure silk quality seldom heard outside the concert hall. Oh, wait, that was someone else talking :green:

Actually, the differences are subtle, but I prefer all our speakers with grills off . . . the grills are really for protection if you need it.

thanks for the info, but i had thought with the grills off the soundstage would extend to at least the adjacent rooms?    :D

You're right on, actually, all the way to the neighbor's house!

and with the soundstage that wide, a nice orchestral piece like the planets on, you can identify each and every member OF the orchestra and point them out!
