Good man, lapsan :thumb:

That deck needs considerable care as to resonance and feedback issues.  Once fixed, simply and inexpensively fortunately, it's a stellar sounding deck :)

I love Grado's...and with a tonearm that is magnetically damped in vertical and horizontal plane, you will milk all that is there from the Grado on it.  The Grado does not hum on this deck (a problem on my other deck, a VPI Classic, and a problem on many decks)

I generally don't recommend Grado's unless one has damping available on your tonearm as it also lessens the little Grado 'hop' they are known to do on some records, too.

Did your score come with one or two arms?  Most have just one (a straight pipe), but sometimes you find one with an S-shaped arm (higher mass) pipe as well.

I hear little difference between the Grado Green (now, called Green 1 and supposedly has internal improvements over older model) at $80 and the Gold (now, Gold 1) at $220.

You can upgrade either by ditching the stock stylus assembly and buying one of the more refined styli from Grado cartridges of old.

The next significant step up in sonics is the Grado Sonata...which is now (I think) $600 :o

Try a van Alstine Longhorn on your Grado...it improves the breed a lot :thumb:

Again, I only recommend Grado's on fluid/magnetic damped arms to get the best out of them.  Anything less has shown itself to not milk the last bit of sensational sonics these cartridges can bring to the fold.  But, I can tell you your JVC has one of the best thought-out designs for damping ever devised for vinyl playback :)

John and/or AC gang,

Does anyone have a link to photos of the Longhorn Grado mod?  I clicked back on the former link and all the photos had apparently expired.

Thanks

Actually, the Longhorn was invented by Frank Van Alstine and is avalible from his website for free in the Audio Basics section, 1982 back issue set, page 8-9, (April). This fully describes the materials needed and how to make and damp everything. You need 4 things, 1000 centi-stoke liquid silicone, K&S #181 1/8" brass U-channel, Plasticlay and some 2 part bonder or epoxy.
