Quiet fans?
« on: 20 Jun 2009, 06:15 pm »
Has anyone found very quiet micro fans for an equipment project?  I would like to put one under each amp just so it will blow some air across it.  I have some granite platforms that are elevated off the floor and had a cutout (similar to a countertop for a sink) put in it and would like to put some fans under them for the summer months when the house is a little warmer.

If you know of some that are very quiet, please post away.

Look here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1683

If you could run this with about 5-8 volts DC, it would move a good deal of air and be nearly silent. Put a little 30W oil in the bearings too.

A regulated DC power supply using a LM317 would drive a couple of these very well. You could control the voltage with this IC too.

link doesn't work.  :(  what is a LM317?

The fan is at www.newegg.com

Here is the model: MASSCOOL FD08025S1M4 80mm Case Fan

It's a 12V computer case fan. When the bearings have a good lube on the, like 30W, it will run very, very quiet with around 5-8v DC applied to it. A LM-317 is a variable voltage regulator 3 pin I.C. Makes an excellent fan controller and requires a heat sink. You could also use something like one of those multi-voltage power cubes to run it.

I've had good luck with 80mm fans I've bought from www.quietpc.com.  They don't sell the exact model I've bought anymore, but their 80mm Austrian Noctua fan looks like the one I bought. It's rated at 17 db. and has an oil bearing motor. In my PS Audio Power Plant, it made for a significant reduction in noise. They sell other noise reducing items for electronics, useful stuff.

I've put resistors in the lines of my Crown amps to slow them down to a breeze. Also I use "Whisper" fans (trade name, absolutely quiet). Research online with computer cooling fan will produce numerous results. All different sizes and voltages are available.

I used the Noctua fans in my HTPC which sits in my A/V rack.  No fan is silent, but they're pretty quiet.  Also they have a long MTBF.

A larger 120mm fan running at a slower speed to produce the same airflow as an 80mm fan will be a little quieter, so I would go for the 120mm if you can accomodate it.
