hi rez support?

i'm going kinda over my skis here, so someone tell me if i'm wrong. if the DAC contained in a unit like my sonos can do 96/24 hi rez files but it is not supported, isn't all that's needed to support it is a software upgrade? and so all that's stopping it is the percieved "lack of interest" in doing so? it doesn't seem like it would be super cost intensive to upgrade - sonos, squeezebox, et. al. roll out regular software upgrades. would a company find this worthwhile to do strictly from a marketing viewpoint - i think squeezebox got a lot of street cred for their whole brand in the audiophile market from releasing the transporter.

My understanding is that you would need to modify the hardware to get the hirez signal to you DAC.  I think you would need to add a "receiver" and the associated circuitry to get the hirez files to the DAC.  I don't know if this is doable in practical terms given the layout of the original units.
