Loreleis and bass output

I'm considering a pair of Loreleis.  Based on all I've read here and elsewhere, they are no slouch when it comes to bass.  Still, I keep looking at its single 6.5" woofer and wondering just how that would work out, especially when you consider all these other choices out there that have multiple 7" or even 8" woofers.  Take, for instance, something like the Emotiva 8.3's - http://emotiva.com/ert83.shtm - I know, I know, this is comparing a Mercedes to a Hyundai, but still, the Emotivas look like a fun sloppy double cheeseburger of a speaker.  Is it fair to say that in terms of bass alone, they would dominate the Lorelei?  Or am I not fully appreciating some of the other internal parts and build qualities of the Lorelei in thinking about this?

FYI, I currently have Nightingales, which I love but feel are just too thin in the bass department for my tastes.

Slow_Down,

I have not heard the Nightingales but I have heard the Loreleis (Kismet Edition) at Klaus' place so I know they were set up correctly.  I was incredibly impressed with the bass output of these speakers and I was given the chance to play a lot of my own music through them so I very familiar with the material.  I currently own Mirage m-3si's and I've never had a bass problem and I have to say that the Loreleis had just as much bass extension and impact as my current speakers but they have a far superior tweeter.  The Loreleis drivers are top notch with out a doubt.

Agreed.  That's one of the amazing things about the Lori's.  The bass is excellent.  The only thing you need to consider is the room size.  Klaus will tell you the same thing.  In a normal sized room, they'll be plenty in the bottom end.

Before you worry about the size of the 7" Scan-Speak driver, you should stop concentrating so much on bass output which really isn't an issue so long as you get this loudspeaker at least 3-4' away from the front wall and start thinking about the strengths of this 7" driver which is the sweet midrange that will absolutely pull you into the music. It's this matchup of a sweet midrange and sweet highs that will wrap you into the music and w/o having to worry where the toe-in is as the Lorelei's require miminal toe-in if any at all. None of this toe-in so they need to either cross at or in front of the listener needed here. And sure a lot of this is indeed a result of a massive German made crossover unit that's straight out of the $7k Symphonic Line Legato loudspeaker. For this size loudspeaker, a 7" Scan Speak is the perfect matchup for retaining an addictive sweet midrange sound while having the cabinet produce all the bass you could possibly want. What is the size of your listening room slow_down?

Robin

Thanks for the feedback.  I know bass is but one part of the equation, but I'd like to get a firmer handle on just how a single relatively mid-size woofer can produce the richly praised bass that the Loreleis are touted to have.  Is it the synergy between the driver and the cabinet architecture?  The monster crossover?

You gotta admit too, there's a certain visual persuasiveness to seeing two 8" woofers on that other speaker I linked too.  Just need someone to use some persuasive words to get me past this hangup :)

What is the size of your listening room slow_down?

My living room is L-shaped.  The main area that both the speakers and I will be in most of the time is 16x12.  There's also a 9x9 sunroom area adjacent to this that forms the "L".

It's the cabinet and rear porting that accounts for the bass. That's the reason why this loudspeaker needs to be pulled away from the front wall so the bass has room to breath from that rear port. For your size room, the Lorelei would be a perfect match. :thumb:

As a further suggestion, I would recommend you PM Byteme who has a Lorelei setup and lives only 2 hours away in Long Bend, WI. He might be willing to setup an audition so you could hear them first hand.

Even a 3 hour drive to Klaus in Indianapolis, IN for a demo would be well worth your time if you're actually seriously considering the Lorelei's. Talk is cheap (my persuasive words  aa )  but listening is divine. :thumb:

Thanks for the idea.  Will consider.  It'd be a lot easier call though if there were a pair I could check out in Chicago!!

I'd be surprised if Klaus doesn't have someone in the Chicago extended area with a pair of Lorelei's.  You might just check in with him...

the real question here is how much bass can you stand? I have a pair that will go deeper than I actually care for. Are very controlled at that. Compaired to the Nightingales; they go way deeper, and there's much more meat to the sound. I also think they image a tad better.
The smaller drivers are easier to controll, and think this contributes to the overall tightness of the speaker. The basic box is large for a driver of this size, and yet ported as well. The bass is so tight and well controlled that you'd think your listening to a good unported box speaker from a years gone by era.
