replacing my Denon receiver
« on: 16 Jun 2009, 10:55 pm »
It has been a stormy spring and summer here at the habitat and my DVDO video processor and Denon 2805 receiver were "cooked" last week.  Both were older, so I'm looking forward to some newer technology, but I'm overwhelmed and a bit confused.  Replacement will be out of pocket and I'm one of the long term unemployeed, so money is an issue.

My current set up used the Denon to create a phantom center mix and send the preamp output through my stereo (pass labs preamp/amp and dunlavy speakers).  The rear speakers and the sub were connected directly to the Denon.  Also the Denon was switching all my video sources and sending one signal to the video processor.

I have noticed that loads of receivers now include nice video processors, but I don't see any pre amp outputs...

Can anyone recommend a receiver I should consider?  I will be purchasing based upon recommendations only - I am disabled and auditioning is not possible.

Thanks for your input!
Edward

What is your budget?  I swapped out a very good processor and some amps for a simple Denon 3808 and it's great.  Amazon has them for $1k.  It has video processing, decodes every codec known to man (including Blu-Ray's TrueHD and DTS HD MA), has full 7.1 preamp outs (drives my HT bypass for mains, my center channel amp, my LFE sub and my music surround amp, while internally running my sides and rear movie surrounds), separate 5.1 and 7.1 setups, has 7.1 analog ins (for multichannel analog audio like SACD/DVD-A or already-decoded BD player) and Audyssey room correction software for auto-setup and room EQ.

Same here.  I jumped on the 3808 for under $1K a couple weeks back on Amazon.  Shipping was prompt and the unit is great.  Firmware updates via the web, solid power, and lots of features.  Can't go wrong for the current close out price :)

The Denon looks good, but does anyone have any experience with the Onkyo TX-SR607? It's half the price with free shipping and a free ipod adapter, and I'm pretty tempted to pick one up.

Can we place home theater receivers in the for sale section here? Have a Yamaha RX-V3800 I am no longer using.

kimkman - you'll find most of the members here more actively two channel music people...there's certainly a home theater section in the classifieds you can post your receiver.  good luck. :)

Thanks! Found it and listed the receiver. Yep 2 channel only here. Used the Yamaha in 2 channel mode while I got the rest of my equipment setup after a move. Sounded pretty good.
