So I'm almost finished with my subwoofer cabinet and some friends of mine thought it looked cool in it's raw mdf form. Is it possible to just slap a few coats of polyurethane onto raw mdf?

Yep, you sure can, or if you want to get fancy you can apply some wax to it.and leave it...
not going to be that durable... but hey it works.
I apply some wax to my Festool work table (which is MDF) so that "stuff" doesn't stick to it.

Yes, but seal it well and stay away from water-borne finishes unless you know what you are doing.
Check these raw mdf panels out.....
bet the price is through the roof but they would make a nice cabinet
