Last Will and Testament (Audio)
« on: 15 Jun 2009, 01:53 pm »
We've had a couple of members pass on and their families were "in tuned" enough with their interests to contact us and "properly dispose" of their audio assets.

Everyone in the U.S. has a will (the government has a standard one that is applied to everyone that doesn't have a valid written one).  Before going on, let me state that the most important reason to have a will is to determine how your spouse/kids would be cared for.

Obviously the standard government issued will won't specify what would happen to audio equipment or the music library.  And unfortunately even if you do have a will, it's probably not up to date or detailed enough to include A/V stuff.  The other half of the problem is the lonely nature of audio and not having someone else to know what your wishes would be.

Are you prepared?  What would you recommend?

Audio equipment would pass to the heir receiving "all" the personal property unless otherwise specified.  Most people would have trouble keeping a will current with respect to an individual piece of equipment (gear swapping).

My heir would not want my stereo or know the value of the equipment. Since I would have to return from the grave totally PO'd if it went for pennies at a yard sale or estate auciton I made arrangements with audio buddies to help liquidate my system if necessary. I am still looking for a loophole clause that lets me take it with me.   :jester:

My buddies are all Audio Note nuts and don't especially like my system (not AN) so I know they wouldn't steal anything.  :rotflmao:

I have a clause in mine that leaves all the gear to my oldest son, included is an addendum that outlines it's market value that I update as anything changes...

There's also a sub to that clause that leaves all the cables to my wife...I just thought it was funny.... :D

If there was a doghouse for the dead you would be in it, my friend. :icon_twisted:

Yeah, but I figured that was already the case so why not have some fun....?

My Dad left Notre Dame season tickets to my brother-in-law when he died...it's only funny when you know my BIL went to Michigan and they had a spirited back and forth their whole lives together about the rivalry between the two...

Frankly, I don't know who I'd leave it to.  Ideally some young underfunded protege who could fully appreciate my quirky audio values.

I wasn't thinking of being highly detailed with my plans, just dump all the equipment together, and all the music somewhere.  But even handing off CDs is getting tough in this age of MP3 downloading.  The only CD players my 18 and 22 year olds own are in their 2001 used cars.

Hope I don't have to worry about that for 40 years or so.

If it happened anytime soon, though, I'm sure my dad would probably take my amps and listen to them in his office - he's been bugging me for a tube amp of his own ever since I sold the Decware Zen  :green: He'd probably take my LP collection, too...revenge for all the times I took CDs of his :)

Is there also a sub to take care of your sub(s)?
You just might meet you maker via the cables if she reads this.
