Safari V Firefox
« on: 14 Jun 2009, 04:11 am »
Being very new to Macs, I was wanting to get opinions from browser users. I have installed Safari 4, but I dont think it is as easy or as fast as Google Chrome. So I was wondering about firefox 3......... anyone using it, what do you like/hate about it   aa

Safari 4 seems to be pretty slow, but I have a 2.5 year old iMac with 1.5 gb of ram.  Firefox 3 seems much faster.

I agree that Safari 4 is slow, my machine is a new 2.93 4gb ram machine, so it should be fast, but since I installed 4 it seems like a wet week on the web........O and another thing, I cannot seem to get on to the apple site now....go figure

Safari 4 doesn't seem slow to me...if anything, its slightly faster than the prior version. I use Firefox sometimes, but my normal "other" browser is Opera.

Safari 4 is blindingly fast on my 24" aluminum iMac with 4 GB of RAM. Pages open instantly. It is certainly much faster than Camino.

It occurred to me that the reason some people find it slow might be that they are running on machines without the NVidia graphics hardware (like me) and perhaps Safari 4 depends on that to get its performance.

Doesn't explain why Nig would have an issue though if he has a new iMac

OS X has a wealth of browsers. Why settle for one?

I usually have at least 2 browsers open, often 3, sometimes 4. You'll gravitate towards the ones you like best.

My primary browser is iCab (it has by far the UI that makes the most of the Macintosh UI), 2nd string is Safari. Some sites will only work with Exploder or FireFox so 3rd string is Camino (Mac-only version based on Firefox code) or Firefox.

Some of the other browsers are: Opera, Flock, Lynx, Netscape, OmniWeb, SeaMonkey, Shiira, WebKit, Sunrise, Amaya, Dillo, ELinks, Epiphany, Galeon, Konqueror, Links, w3m, and BumperCar for kids

Empty your caches. Run Onyx. If it persistes, nuke all your Apple cookies.

I'm running Safari 4 on my macbook pro (2007 vintage) w/ 4gb of ram and it runs fantastic. Chrome might be a little faster but the current build is definitely not ready for prime time... when it is I'll probably switch to it. If only for the fact that I can search by typing in the address bar, as silly as that might be.

Thanks Dave, I will try to work out how to do that..........I was at home with windows,......and am a little lost with the Mac, but it is worth working thru these teething issues. Another thing we are struggling with is we can't print from aperture to our epson tx700. It is a bit frustrating

Thanks, Dave/planet10

I have been unable to post on one particular Mac computer in my home network (the biggest desktop and most important one!) and I don't like Firefox so I am posting this with iCab. Before now I was unaware of its existence.

Resisted Safari 4 at first because in the beta's they had a tab layout like Chrome, which isn't my cup 'o tea.  But I downloaded it last week on my late '08 unibody mb, and I really like it.  They changed the tabs to a more traditional layout.

Only thing I don't like is that there is no fix on Windows machines there is no way make links open in new tabs w/o right clicking or control-click.

Seems very fast to me.

I've been using Firefox for the last year or so, but I installed the new Safari 4 a few days ago and it seems to be very fast IMHO.  Am running it on 4 different Macs...an Intel-based MacBook Pro, a G5-based iMac, and two other G4-based Macs (an iBook and an eMac)....all seem very good...

I too am getting very good results with both S4 and FF on a venerable G4. Also a fan of OmniWeb. Like planet10, I use different ones at different times according to my needs- or my mood.

Does anyone know if there is a Safari 4 uninstaller to revert to Safari 3?

I checked versiontracker and didn't see anything.
