QUAD's Peter James Walker dies...
« on: 22 Dec 2003, 01:01 am »
A luminary in the hifi industry has just died after a long illness at 87.

An incredible man, controversial, flamboyant and insightful, Walker epitomised many of the things which stand for hifi.  He almost invented the term, producing his first domestic amps in 1949, and the legendary ESL57 in 1957.

Walker was very good at publicity, rather like Tiefenbraun of Tannoy, and always ready with a controversial double blind test - which often embarassed the audio press.  He was definitely mischievous, rather like Paul Klipsch, but the world will be poorer for his passing.

Here's an interesting article from John Atkinson of Stereophile:

Ivor Tiefenbrun of Linn ... the man who convinced the world in the early 70s that you had to have a good source or the sound chain was irredeemable - ie. the turntable made the most difference to the sound coming outa the speakers!!

But was he at Tannoy first, Hugh?

Regards ... and a very merry Christmas.
