DIY kit: A/V-3S, a few questions
« on: 10 Jun 2009, 01:31 am »
I was thinking about buying two of these kits to use as small-ish monitors for 2- channel listening.  I like the size, efficiency and easy load, (and of course the great price++).  Also, I've only read positive things about GR speakers and that they offer great support; direct from the designer.

And I'm hoping that there might be someone out there that could share their opinion on such a set up.

My questions are:

1.  What is the minimum listening distance for optimum driver integration?

2.  Is the crossover any different from the A/V3, just in case I move the speakers to a larger room and build the larger tl enclosures?

3.  What would the dimensions be for a ported (non-tl) box?

4.  What does the Sonicap upgrade consist of (or how much more for the Platinum bypass caps)?

5.  What is the crossover frequency and slope?

Thank you.

The crossover was designed at just 1 meter away. I wouldn't imagine you needing to be much closer than that.

It is the same.

3.  What would the dimensions be for a ported (non-tl) box?

Ports can be provided when ordering the kit that can be used in an optimal ported air space. It is almost double the sealed air space of the A/V-3S. The ports are very inexpensive.

4.  What does the Sonicap upgrade consist of (or how much more for the Platinum bypass caps)?

All caps are replaced with Sonicaps. Platinum by-pass caps are $29 each for a .1uF value. If you used them only in the tweeter circuit then you would need just one pair of them.

Both offer the next level in detail and resolution.

Pretty smooth huh?  :thumb:

Thanks for the super fast response.

One last question, would an aperiodic enclosure pose any problems (?).  I was thinking about adding one of those Scanspeak variovents to the rear, to flatten the impedence peak and add a touch more bottom extension.

If you build the AV-3S system, I highly recommend the Sonicap and No-Rez options. They definately improve the speakers sound quality and are well worth the extra cost.

I don't for see it creating any "problems".
