I have been away so hadn't had the change to listen at home yet. I think it is easy their best album since BTCS. I think it is very good. In my car it sounded waaay to hot on bass and percussion with Dave's voice too reccessed; I am hopeful this is not the case when I get the opportunity to listen at home. Also, seemed like a lot less Boyd than usual on the album  But, IMO, a very solid and well thought out album.

It is among one of there best albums. Everything just gels right. But of course they meant to do that. They are master musicians!

There's a few reviews over at Head-Fi that say, although the music is good and maybe their best, the mastering is over compressed and the top end can be shrill and too bright. Is that your opinion too Mike? Is it an audiophile's delight or is it mastered in a typical pop-rock fashion with no dynamics and that shrillness on the top?

Has anyone heard the vinyl of this album and compared it to the CD. Just wondering if that might be mastered differently (and better)?

I have the download Bob and I don't get them issues at all. Chris (Lonewolf) mentioned to me at Mike's RAVE that he didn't care for this album but I really like it myself. Sounds great, both vocally and instrumentally. I'm so sick of Matthews old stuff that I'm finding this new album totally refreshing. :thumb:

Cheers,

I am a big DMB fan and I purchased the new CD the day it was released.  It sounds great on my system and other than track #7 I think it is a fantastic album.  Highly recommended!

Both systems at home present the album fine, with no shrillness. One has tubes, the other does not. My car gives the shrill now and then, but which is correct. If you compare it to a Keb Mo recording it is definitely compressed. Is that the way its recorded so they can fit it on a CD? Just a recording style? Its weird when some recordings are so open and there and palpable and some need a little kick in the pants. Fantastic album though... So much in the way of nuance that makes it superb.. not in the recording persay but in the musicianship!
