Saw this over the weekend.  I can't understand why they can't make live-action movies as emotionally touching as this.   :thumb: :thumb:

****1/2 - lost 1/2 a star only because kids thought that it could have been a bit funnier. (it is a kid flick nevertheless).
Story wise, it was excellent.

I caught this the opening weekend, and was blown away  :thumb:. Caught me unawares actually. Was expecting a slapstick goofy movie, but found it to be very touching, warm and funny. And it managed to do all this without being sappy .. so hats off to the makers. Wish there were more movies like this.

Goes on my "Why I love movies" list.  This is a great family movie, get up and go see it (in 3D). Usually with animation movies there is a level of detachment because we know the characters are not human and maybe the film doesn't do a good enough job of blurring that line.  For me this film all but removed the apparent boundaries and pulled me in.  One thing I like about this movie is that grandparents, parents and children can all go see this movie together and be charmed.  Pixar at its best.

It was "too much" for my sensitive daughter who just turned 7.  She sopped through a lot of the movie but hung in there and "liked" it at the end.

Warning -- don't see it if you just lost someone dear.  Contains a bit of anti-German bias with the blimp and Doberman IMO.

Fwiw, I saw it this weekend, taking my daughter and 10 of her friends for my daughter's 7th birthday.  They all seemed to love it....a couple of them said that parts made them sad, but overall they were all smiling when they came out of the theater, laughing about the funny parts....

But yes...do note that this is a PG-rated movie (not G).  And I didn't really notice any anti-German bias (I don't really associate dobermans with Germans...perhaps if it was a German Shepard...!)

I saw UP opening weekend in 3-D with my daughters, 3 and 7. They both really liked it, although most was a bit over the head of the 3 year old. She did like the talking dogs, especially the lovable Dug. The first half of the movie is really not the action packed kid movie you expect and does have mature themes like aging, loss and life choices.  However, those themes are what make the movie above average, IMO. How many movies deal realistically with death, show older people as fully dimensional characters with abilities and something to offer younger people and are also funny and entertaining?  The answer is sadly very few. Meantime, the kids can still enjoy it as an animated 3-D comedy.

Wife and I just saw it in 2D (we are out on the boonies) and we both give it easily four stars!  Great flick on aging, loss, and renewal.  Hint:  stay for the credits.
