Quick RM-1 Question
« on: 6 Jun 2009, 03:38 pm »
If I purchased a used or even a new pair of RM-1's would I be able get "upgrade" support (like an FST, Mega-woofers or soundcoat) if I sent them to El Sobrante, Ca?

Just curious...

Thanks

The RM1 is no longer available "new" (unless B finds a pair of cabinets in the back of the factory)

FST cannot be "easily" added due to the different cutouts, (but at the factory they might be able to accomadate)

There is not a recent 8" WCF Megawoofer for that speaker.

Sound Coat and SR-71 can certainly be applied with no problems.

I might also add that B, would most likely be happy to "spruce" a pair up for you, but with RM2jr's at $1999, it might be more cost effective to look at that option.

Or even a 626jr with the New Smaller Sub might equal or out perform the RM1 in the normal sized room with greater placement (height) options.

Dynamic Sound Audio may still have a pair, but I haven't contacted them yet. I like the size and base extenstion of the RM-1's. My goals are a reasonable priced full range speaker that is easily portable and the RM-1's peaked my interest.

I don't recommend reworking RM1's, particularly those with the old ferrite magnet panels.  Adding the FST, for example, requires recutting the cabinet.  With parts and labor that's $550 and you'd have to ship to the factory, about $240pr roundtrip.  Major crossover changes are also required.

In addition to what B just posted, the website and dealer you are looking at is over 8 years old.  They are no longer dealers and haven't been for many years, I think it is just that they negelected to take the page down.

If you are looking for portability, I would still suggest the 626R or 626jr with MegaWoofer upgrade.

They play exceptionally low for Stand mounts and are far more portable than the RM1.

I would concur. The 626, which I owned, are an excellent choice for top notch sound, including excellent bass extension and quality, in a compact size and price.

I'm a former RM1 owner and currently use the 626 with a small sub. Even without a sub these sound very good and with one I think they sound better than the RM1's did. More mid-bass warmth for one thing.
