J River Media Jukebox 12.0. album importing problems
«

Has anyone encountered problems while importing albums into J River Media Jukebox 12.0.
The program won't import albums as discrete entities. It lumps all files into a single album. Alternatively it will access the data as one long list 674 entries long. The program sounds great but I can't organize my music. Ideally I would like to have all forty albums cover art show up in a scrollable field, click on the desired album cover and have the songs on the album show up in a play list on the right side of the window and chose the songs to be played.
Does any body know how this can be done in J Rivers player.

That's a strange occurance for sure Scotty, have you tried posting your issues at J. River's interactive forum
here?
? There's a lot of good informative info on this site.

Scotty, what file format are you trying to import? If *.wav, you will need to organise your files into directories and subdirectories on your hard drive first, eg genre\artist\album.
Then in JRiver, import them, select all files and right click Library Tools...Fill Properties From Filename. If you have cover art in each album directory (eg *.jpg files) JRiver will attach the art to each album.

Have you setup your Library & Folders which is located in Tools/Options? In Library & Folders, you'd setup your Auto Import to C:\My Music. Once you've added the folder, you can chose options like Run Auto Import in Background which should add any new folder downloaded in C:\My Music automatically to your J. River library.
I have my menu on the left setup for Artists, Albums, Artists Albums, Gendres, Recent Albums, and 3D Albums. All my individual folder inside my hard drive is auto loaded into each category with covers most of the time. Theere are times tho when I have to manually load the covers and I always have to fill out the Gendre in the tags.

I think I may have figured part of the problem,I was trying to import about forty albums at one time from my music folder and this basically crashes the J River program. The folders also do not have a genre label. When I add one folder at a time and correct the errors the the program may make in identifying the artist or track it then seems to work the way the screen shots I've seen imply it does. I do like the sound it has but sorting this problem just about had me beat. I got 8hrs into solving this problem, not to mention a headache. The program does have better dynamics, low level resolution and extension at the frequency extremes than others I have tried. Not bad considering it's free,I just wish there was a detailed tutorial available that told you what to do when importing files. kittens suggestion about -Fill Properties From Filename-was very useful. Thanks for the timely help.

I would try creating a new library and then rip (not import existing) a dozen or so discs with MJ and see if that doesn't work better for you. It certainly sounds like the tags on your existing files might not be all that accurate/complete and without decent tags any program is going to have problems sorting/displaying things the way you want, until you either fix them manually or re-rip with the lookup feature. Either way though will require some effort on your part to ensure the data is accurate and what you want. Unfortunately with a program as flexible as MJ there is a bit of a learning curve and I don't know of any tutorials per se, although one may exist, your best bet is to continue asking questions at the MJ forum.

Don't forget to save all that hard work, preferably to an external drive:
File...Library...Backup Library
And back up your music files directory to an external drive as well.
That way if your machine dies or you need to reformat your OS, you can reinstall JRiver and your music, then File...Library...Import Library and you're back where you were.
I can import several hundred albums at a time no problem (I rip using EAC), 40 should be easy
although I guess the important thing is you're not experiencng any glitches on playback.
Agree it's a nice sounding player.

kitten,MerlinWorks, this is the file path? to one album C:\My Music\Wolff & Hennings\The Bells of Sh'ang Sh'ung and the complete path to a track C:\My Music\Wolff & Hennings\The Bells of Sh'ang Sh'ung\Henry Wolff-01-Time Ice
Is this similar to the file path in your My Music folder. Also, would I create a series of subfolders within My Music labeled according to genre C:\My Music\Alternative\Wolff & Hennings\The Bells of Sh'ang Sh'ung
C:\My Music\Prog Rock\Pink Floyd\The Dark Side Of The Moon\01 Speak to Me-Breath ?
And yet another question, where is the music files directory,is it separate from the JRiver program?

Hi, exactly where it is by default would depend on your version of Windows.
In JRiver, go to Tools...Options...Library Folders. Under Auto Import Folders you'll see where JRiver is pointing to currently. You can change this to wherever you want. Personally I keep my music on an external drive, but no matter, the principle is the same: JRiver just needs you to specify exactly how your files are structured. The main things is there is a consistent structure. By way of example this is how mine is set up:
I have an external drive, M:\Music, then subdirectories for genre, artist, album. So using your Pink Floyd example, which I happen to have in front of me the first track location is:
M:\Music\Rock\Pink Floyd\1973 - The Dark Side Of The Moon\01 Speak To Me.wav
Ok, so in my case I would import (either automatically or manually, doesn't matter) everything in M:\Music. JRiver would add the new tracks since the last visit.
Then, under Playlists, select Recently Imported.
Select all of the files, then right click and select Library Tools...Fill Properties from Filename.
Copy and paste this in the "Directories" box:
[Genre]\[Artist]\[Date (year)] - [Album]
And in the "Filename" box:
[Track #] [Name]
Afterwards you should be able to view your tracks according to genre, artist, song, album name, track number and year.
It's very flexible. Just play around with the various menus etc. You can create different views, for example, you can make it display an artist's albums in order of year rather than alphabetically, you can set it up to encode your wav files to mp3 and synch to your mp3 player etc. Once you get over the learning curve it's good balance of user interface and sound quality. I've tried quite a few players and this one's still at the top of the pile, especially with ASIO4ALL.
Hope this helps.
