Hello,

I hope this is the appropriate board to post this question.  Please move it if it belongs in another board.

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a type/brand of black paint that would work well for painting a pair of Sound Anchor 3 post speaker stands.

I recently acquired these stands and knew that they were going to need some work.

I would really appreciate any advice and or pointers.

Thanks

-Nick

Is it paint that is on them now? Or is it something else?

If there is exposed metal, your best bet I'd think would be to lightly sand the whole stand and first use a self-etching primer (get at auto parts store).  This ensures that the paint will stick well and not scratch off easy.   Then you can paint them as you like.

I'd probably opt for a textured black paint.  Rustoleum sells a bunch of "Hammered" textured paints.

Hi Josh,

Yes they are just finished in the standard black finish (painted?) that Sound Anchor stands usually have.

There are several small spots with exposed metal.  I have not heard of self etching primer.  I will check it out.  I think I saw those Rustoleum hammered paints you mentioned.

It looks like I will be hitting a couple of stores later today.

Thanks for your help Josh.

Nick,

those stands as they come are powder coated.  I agree with Josh on the self-etching primer (SEM is the brand I use), but in order to do it right, you should have the original powdercoaat sandblasted off.  I just don't think it will look very good with spots of powdercoat and spots of rustoleum because you'll most likely never get the textures to match.  Then there's the long-term viability of painting over powdercoat, and I've never tried it, but my guess is that it won't hold up very well over time.

Sandblasting should be cheap, but re-powdercoating the stands will cost probably a lot more than you'll want to spend.

If the spots are small or out of sight, you may not need to sandblast. Be sure to get the surface roughed up and clean with something like synthetic steel wool and denatured alcohol. The glossier the paint, the more the blemishes show. Be sure to follow the paint directions and be patient. Don't be in a hurry. Good luck.

Just wanted to follow up with my findings.

I wanted to get this done on my own so that knocked out any sandblasting and I also had a budget to worry about.

I read more about the self etching primer on some hot rod car forums and decided that there was a good chance I could skip it for this project.

Josh you were spot on with your Rustoleum hammered finish.  I went with the Rustoleum black hammered finish.

I used steel wool on the stands until the rough areas were smooth.  I then thoroughly cleaned the stands prior to starting the spraying.

I could not be more pleased with the results.  They came out really well and are waiting for me to finish building my monitors.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and suggestions.  I really appreciate all of you.

Hi Anand,

I am going to be building a monitor that is closely related to the Supravox Lisa.

http://www.supravox.fr/anglais/enceintes/sat135br.htm

I have a pair of Supravox 135lb that have been modified with a custom wooden phase plug that allows this driver to shine.

The speakers in my main system use the same driver in a two way design.  In my main system I use a pair of Hawthorne Audio Augies to augment the bass.  It works beautifully.

I fell in love with their sound so I decided to build a single driver speaker for use in my second system.  I am not planning on using a sub but will decide once they are assembled and I use them for a little while.

The second system is in my family room and will be primarily used while watching television shows and my wife watches the occasional movie in that room.

When it is a sporting event I am interested in or a movie we want to watch we use the main system which doubles for 2 channel audio and home theater.
