FS: Avalanche 15" subs XBL^2 motors
« on: 27 May 2009, 05:15 pm »
I have two identical Ascendent Audio 15" Avalanche sub drivers**.  The big boys with XBL^2 motors.  These were all the rage before Ascendent Audio went defunct and have been sought after fiercely since.  Mine have sat unused for over 3 years.  They are NOS!

I am asking $450 for the pair.  Shipping will be hefty and will be the responsibility of the buyer.  Local pick ups welcome.

I cannot post pictures right now because the gallery is down.  The motors are huge.  They are serious sub drivers for the serious home theater or audio enthusiast, not the typical off the shelf drivers.

Please note that these are not the same as the drivers sometimes referred to as AVA15.  I can't remember the specifics but those were a different company and not nearly as brute as these.

Haha, that's a monster - totally dwarf's the other drivers.  I'd buy it if I had room for a sub.  Good luck on the sale.

I can't afford the price of admission but I am curious as to what size box those 15 inchers take?

Best of luck with the sale.

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom,
I haven't actually used them and its been a while since I modeled alignments for them.  I'd be completely willing to help a buyer out with coming up with a box plan for the alignment they'd want.

The size will depend on the alignment.  Sealed can get pretty small (relatively speaking) since this is a long stroke sub with high power handling.  A ported box can be anywhere from reasonable to huge depending on how low you want to tune the sub.  HT freaks seem to get a kick out of turning their subs into sub-sonic warfare, so they tend to like to build huge ported boxes, but that isn't necessary.

For music, I'd opt for a sealed sub with a Q of .56 or thereabouts.  One can even reverse taylor the rolloff for the room gain so the result is flat.  Even sealed the extention will be low and the transient response will be quick.  But I'd think it would be possible to come up with a musical sounding ported tuning as well .

I might flex a bit on the price if one were serious, especially if it were a local sale.

I know where your coming from Josh.  I have two NHT1259 woofers sitting on my work bench right now waiting for sealed boxes to be built for my home theater.  From memory I think the modeling suggested 3 cubic feet with a Q around 0.5.

My home theater room has to be built first so lots of projects and very little time.  I can't get over the size of those Avalanche woofers.  They must move some serious air.  If I had more money I'd be interested but then I'd have 2 NHT woofers to sell

Cheers,
Tom

I thought I'd provide some information that would be helpful for a prospective buyer.

A build thread including T/S parameter in first post.

Another thread discussing enclosure for Avalanche 15.

Note the last post where he summarizes an article comparing the AV15 to the Tumult.

Tried to send you a PM but it wouldn't go.

What would the cost be to ship these to Zip 53142?

Josh,

I system wouldn't let me PM you, so I have to post it here. I'll give you $500 for the pair, paid through Paypal, shipping included.

I'm in Jersey City.  I still have them.  However, one guy was trying to save some scratch for them.

I am not sure if I responded to everyone who inquired.  PMs were having difficulties.

I estimate that each sub will be in the 45lb neighborhood packed.  Boxes are likely to be 20" cubed.  My zip is 07307 so shipping estimates should be easy to obtain now.
