Why so quiet around here?
« on: 23 May 2009, 08:33 pm »
GEEZ...  no posts since 5/20/09!  Everyone must be too busy listening to their AVA gear to make any posts.

I'll waste a little bandwidth and put up a couple of pics of my NOS Telefunken 12AX7's I just bought for my Ultra SL phono section.  Here they are in relation to the Sovtek 12AX7LPS's being replaced...

Here they are happily in their new home...

Here's the whole rig...

Beautiful setup and must be beautiful sound also.  Would you describe the audio rack?

Thanks.  It is indeed "beautiful sound", but I can certainly not take any credit for that!  The rack is a Billy Bags unit, the exact model number I don't remember.  I bought it through Audio Advisor and I received the wrong color.  They gave me in-store credit to make up for the snafu.  All is well, and they were very nice and apologetic about the screw up.  The rack is very solid and has plenty of space for all sorts of toys.  And I think it looks good, too.  Not the cheapest, but not outrageous in price.  Good stuff, that Billy Bags...

We're all here, just kind of keepin' it cool. I think it's way too nice outside here in Minnesota for anyone to be indoors. I'm BBQ'n outside right now, listening to vinyl in the garage. Tonights dish is BBQ'd cabage, pork loin and baked potato with freshly cut chives (and sour cream). Yummy.

I've been listning to some weird LPs today, UFO, real early Fleetwood Mac (1967 stuff), The Strabs and The Fixx-Phantoms.

We are also having a beverage or 2. The wife made me a real nice clamdigger, seasoned just right. I love them. But can only have just one.

I hate holding myself back!!!

:)

Everyone, have a nice weekend from everyone at AVA!

That's a nice sounding meal, Wayner.  My kids are having a frozen pizza and I'm having leftovers.  My wife's out of town for the weekend.  This would seemingly mean lots of AVA/Salk listening time, but to be honest I had a really great time outdoors with my two kids all day at Itasca State Park.  That is such a nice resource, and I live only 17 miles away.  Just hearing the birds, creaking trees, and other natural sounds really makes me realize "hi-fi" for almost free (an annual park pass does cost a minimal fee)!  But, I DO enjoy my vinyl Pink Floyd, Big Star, Pixies, Pretenders, etc. as time allows...

I was wondering the same thing about dropoffs in postings, starting around AKFEST, and then continuing with the AC outage.

I've been glued in front of my Van Alstine rig. A weird episode of back pain last week made me not want to go outside...

Been buying up old vinyl. Right now listening to BS&T second album on the deep red 360 Columbia label. Don't even like 'em that much then or now, but the sound is sooooo good. I'm back plugged into my "Special" AVA phono input with great results.

Bought 12 records today for 6 bucks at a garage sale, Carly Simon, Argent, Brian Auger, Pink Floyd, among others. Stay away from the stevehoffman.tv website or you'll be rebuying all of your favorite records on older, more original labels.

My Rega Saturn has a lot of dust on it...

Speaking of Van Alstine, I nodded in agreement at Art Dudley's Stereophile column this month. He talked about companies that waste gobs of money on 1" thick faceplates when they could be making better stuff at a better price.

Good thing all of us are already there, eh?

I've been reading posts mostly and have been working on other stuff. A few issues here at home have diverted some of my attention.

robinje: I love it up there at the headewaters of the Mississippi. If the rest of you ever get to Minnesota, go to Itasca State Park and see where the Mississippi river starts. It's pretty cool.

I hoped that there would be more reports from AK FEST, although with AVA gear, which doesn't impart a sonic signature, there might not be too much to report about.  Unless there is some question or a posting about a recent acquisition, there isn't always a lot to write about.  The AVA forum reminds me of the Wilson Combat forum on forums.1911forum.com, where Wilson Combat pistols generally perform as expected, and there aren't a lot of posts about technical problems, crummy service, etc., as there are on other forums on that site.

I don't know about the thread, but items sporting the Van Alstine moniker over here are being anything but quiet.  :thumb:

What happened to all the galleries? And the spell check?  This new website sucks.

Well, I wouldn't say it sucks, it's certainly better than what it was last weekend. Thanks again, JohnR!!!

See this thread. This is only temporary.  :thumb:

Yes, AudioCircles is limping along because of a fusion melt down. It's only slightly inconvient as opposed to not being here at all.

Thank you JohnR!!!!!!!

John is working on the server and will get things going back to normal in due time. In the mean time, relax and enjoy the circles.

Frank, have you decided on a new name for the Ultimate 70 with the AVA chassis?

Time to do those outdoor things like:  mow the lawn, paint the shed, mow the lawn again, pull weeds, help my wife set up the outdoor fishpond, mow once more.  I get a change to listen every now and then!  Oh yea, I need to go to work 40+ hours a week too.

I did put a NOS pair of Telefunken 12ax7s in my Fet Valve DAC.  The image is now wider, deeper and smoother.  There is more air and space. Highly recomended tweek.

My daughter is getting married in October and I just paid for a summer semester of college for my son, that is puts a dent in the funds use to support my audio addiction.

I plan on just buying new music over the summer, but a new phono cartridge will be in my future

It's always fun to read the posts on Audio Circle.

Sounds good there.

Today I'm doing a brisket in the smoker. Then we'll have some burgers, steaks, and salmon on the grill, plus some grilled veggies and provolone cheese.

I made up some rub for the brisket, and then we're making chimichurri for the grilled items.

Some nice fresh salads with greek olives and balsamic vinegar, and we're all set.

I must say that Memorial day is for remembering the veterans who died for defending our freedom, so we can enjoy our grilled steak and music. Some may think that I am trying to be political, but I am not. I am just stating my thought.

I think those of us here in USA certainly agree with you. I have had many in my family who have served and are now resting in peace.
