SOLD: Adcom GFP-750 Preamp (Passive Mode Only)
« on: 13 May 2009, 10:02 pm »
For sale is an Adcom GFP-750 that works in passive mode only. Bought from Audiogon from a seller that misrepresented the cost of repairs to restore active mode. Most reviewers seem to prefer passive to active mode, but I need the gain provided by active mode in my system.

This is a Sterophile Class A component whose circuitry was designed by legendary Nelson Pass. This is the more sought-after blue board version that was made in the USA.

Features of the preamp:
*Fully balanced Design
* 1 XLR and 4 RCA inputs
* 1 XLR and 2 RCA outputs
* remote control
*balance control
* tape in/out
* home theater bypass in/out

The technician who looked at this preamp said it looked like the damage to the amp was caused by an electrical surge (which damaged the zeners that feed the active gain circuitry, likely causing excess voltage to damage a FET in one channel). I've also consulted with Adcom's technical service department about running the preamp in passive, and they said it should be no problem. Happy to supply copies of my e-mail correspondence with them and pic of the power supply damage. Can also supply GFP-750 service manual for DIY types.

If you are looking for a great passive preamplifier with a remote, this is a super one.

Exterior looks great, and I will ship in original box.

I also found the sound to be better in passive mode.  In that sense this is a steal compared to units that can function in active mode also...

$500 for a broken preamp? Am I missing something?

The amp has a passive mode and an active mode (with gain). Sounds great in passive mode, which is preferred by most reviewers of the unit. All other functions work. A similar GFP-750 that didn't work in active mode sold for $500 on A'gon in the past month or so. That's how I arrived at my price.

Not often that you'll find a Stereophile Class A component for such a low price.

I'd look at it as a great passive preamp with a nice full-function remote control that includes volume control, balance control, input select, mute and can even select HT bypass. Even 1 balanced input and a balanced output in addition to 4 RCA inputs and 2 RCA outputs.

Yes, you are missing the whole reason for this price and this caveat.  I owned this model and ONLY played it in passive mode.  It is a very good pre (passive) and an average pre (active).  If you don't need the gain afforded by the active stage then this little gem saves you huge coin!

Information? Tact?  :scratch:

I have been using one of these (in passive mode) for years in my mastering set up.
What is particularly invaluable to me is the ability to switch, with the remote, instantly and silently (no click) between sources, for comparison purposes.

It is instructive to be able to compare active and passive modes at the flick of a switch; even though the active mode sounds good, and occasionally gives the impression of being more dynamic, it always sounds distinctly coarse compared to passive which is smoooth. By comparison to active, passive is silk compared to cotton or even light canvas. An easy choice for me - I leave mine in passive at all times, except when I need a ton of gain to hear some noise down around the noise floor.

I have one too.  It will be with me until I die or it dies first.

I listen  through the 750 in passive mode 95% of the time.
