USB or Toslink DAC that passes surround sound
« on: 7 May 2009, 07:57 pm »
I'm looking for a DAC that will allow me to come out of a Mac Mini using either USB or Toslink and get not only 2-channel, but DTS and DD to a surround processor.  I want to re-clock the digital stream due to the rather poor quality of what exits the Mac by default.

This forum looked like the best place to start my search.

Thanks!

The fine folks at AVS Forum http://www.avsforum.com/ may have another solution.

I use an M-Audio Transit http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Transit.html to send a true 5/1 DD/DTS digital signal via Toslink to my processor. The software also does 2 and 4 channel sound (without a discrete sub channel) for video and music that is not DD/DTS encoded.

You could then plug the Toslink into something like the Emotiva Audio UMC-1 http://emotiva.com/umc1.shtm or an Anthem Statement D2v  http://statement.anthemav.com/HTML/Products/D2v/D2v.html depending on your budget.

I also have a HagUSB going to a DAC just for stereo too.

Such it possible.  I just haven't planned to do it.  Too many other things right now.  I have the silver editions of CORNET2 and CHIME coming out, plus a guitar amplifier prototype, and then the turntable motor power supply.  Lots of cool stuff, not enough time.

Just curious what changes are in store for the silver editions? Are the changes cosmetic or something more?
