FS: NetGear ReadyNAS NV+ $550 ** Cancelled **
« on: 7 May 2009, 02:12 pm »
For sale is my very lightly used NetGear (originally Infrant) ReadyNAS NV+ server.  This unit is in perfect condition, has been used very little, has the 1 gb memory and 4 Seagate Barracuda 400 gb drives, which in the X-RAID configuration gives about 1.2 TB of usable storage space with hot swap capability in case of drive failure.

Selling for a number of reasons, but primarily because the user interface has problems with my screen reader software and because none of my systems have nearby network connections, which means I have to run long cables all over the place in order to use this kind of solution.

Price is $550  which includes shipping in lower 48 and paypal fees.  One caveat is that I can't ship for about a week as I don't currently have a suitable box and it will take a few days to get one.

One note: you don't have to use this with a squeezebox even though it does have slimserver and iTunes servers in firmware.

Thanks for looking,

-- Jim

Bump for correction to brand name -- NetGear, Not Logitech -- originally Infrant.  And price reduction to $625 shipped.

Thanks for looking,

Jim

Contact me if interested.

Thanks,

Bump, (plus endorsement)

I have one of these, and I'm pretty happy with it.
This is my main file server for home, and streams my music to my SB3.

And it probably doesn't matter, but my daytime job is storage administrator, where I manage 1.3PB

Ok Jim,
I will nibble.

I was thinking of getting an external harddrive to use to store the music. I am just not quite up to speed on what this unit does and the advantages over a regular computer. Could you help me understand?  Is this unit wireless? Why do you need cables?  How does it connect to the squeezebox?

Thanks
Tony

Tony,

NAS stands for "Network Attached Storage", which means it connects to your home network just like any other device except it's main purpose is to act as a central storage device.  In the case of this machine, it also has the software interface for streaming to your squeezebox over the network.  So, if your SB is connected wirelessly to the networkm, then the server and SB talk that way, otherwise they can use a wired interface.  I just found that in my house, the wired connection was more reliable than the wireless, but that's my house and it may be different in yours.

So, one difference between this and a computer is that this runs the slimserver (or whatever the latest version is called) internally and thus your computer doesn't need to be on to use the SB.  Another big difference is that the storage is spread out over 4 drives in a scheme that safeguards your data in case a drive fails.  If a drive should fail, you just plug in another one and the data automatically gets rebuilt on to it from the other 3 drives.  This also means that it is easy to upgrade the storage capacity by one at a time replacing the drives with larger capacity ones.  For example, if you were to get 4 new 1.5 tb drives and add them, one at a time and waiting for each one to rebuild, then you could increase the storage to approximately 4.5 Tb.  The formula is 4 - 1 * size of drive (assuming they are all of the same size.

And it's a lot smaller than a typical tower PC, plus has USB ports for downloading to usb drives, iPods, etc., and lots more.

HTH,

Jim

This is a small self-contained specialized computer. It has built-in harddrives, and a specialized operating system that serves files to a 'normal' computer. It has some other features, like a built-in SlimServer software, that enables it to work with a Squeezebox. It also has a management web-server to help set it up and configure/manage.

It doesn't do anything that a regular computer can't be made to do, really. It is just smaller, doesn't need a monitor/keyboard/mouse, less noise and less power consumption.

Is this unit wireless? Why do you need cables?  How does it connect to the squeezebox?

The box itself isn't wireless. You will need to somehow wire it into your network. If you already have an Ethernet switch (or hub), for example in the back of your wireless access point/router, you can wire the box in there.
Then, your wireless computer or Squeezebox will be able to connect to it.
Depending on your environment, you may have to do some IP configuration.

Thanks
Tony

No problem!

Well thank you both for the information.  I think I will just stick with usb external hardrive though.
This would be overkill for me and my limited needs. (-Although, I am sure though once it crashes, I will have wished I had bought this!!)

Not enough interest and I won't drop the price any lower.  Turns out with a little system reconfiguration I can make this work after all.
