Squeezecenter and windows error
« on: 7 May 2009, 02:26 am »
whenever I open squeezecenter I ger a "windows -no disk error"
I have posted over at the logitech forums but have not gotten any answers there other than
it's a known bug amd it's a windows problem...
It seems to happen when the "itunes import" starts during the scan
Is ther something I can change in the settings or itunes??

has anyone here had this problem???

Im using XP..
other suggestions are pointing towards playlists, but I'm not sure
if it's Itunes playlists or Squeezecenter playlists.
I don't have any playlists set up in squeezecenter yet.
I'm not sure how to configure the PL's ineither application...

So you have it set to automatically do an import from iTunes every time you launch it?  If you disable that, does it happen?

every time I launch Squeezecenter, it rescans my library which includes itunes as well as my flac files.
How would I disable the itunes portion of the scan?
As it is now, it hangs up when it gets to the itunes scan and never finishes the scan..

Under Settings, go to the PlugIns tab and deselect iTunes.   You'll have to restart SS then for it to take effect but that should stop it from trying to scan iTunes.

Thanks Bryan, I will try that as soon as I get home!!

So if that is the problem where do I go from there to get Itunes back in my library??

Well, you can always cheat.    Put a folder in your music library that's just a link to your iTunes folder

What I did was to create a folder in "My Music" folder on my external HD and copied all the files form itunes into it..
I then created another folder outside of "My Music" for my .flac files in order to keep them separate.

Could this be the problem??

p.s. Thanks for your help!!

Yes.  That could be an issue.  Generally, it works better if you have everything set up under 1 master folder.  You can bridge off of that with links to the 2 separate places.

When you 'copy' a folder to a location, you can either actually copy it or you can create a link to it.  If you do a right mouse button drag to the folder, you get the option to move, copy, or create a shortcut.  You want to create a shorcut.  That leaves everything where it is and just creates a link to the other location.  The link is in the primary folder so the scanning will still find it.

I use such links on my dedicated PC - I have several external drives, and they are not all, always attached.

I created the main music folder on Drive A, and inside that folder are links (shortcuts might be the appropriate XP name) to music folders on Drives B and C.

Those links/shortcuts are only valid when those drives are attached, but are always present in the main music folder.

I don't think my machine scans all my music everytime I boot it, but as I run it headless, I am not certain.

Hi Mark!!
Maybe you could drop by sometime and give me a couple of tips on organizing
my music!!

Bryan , I think I understand, however my goal is to move all my music to my external hard drive, so I guess I need to "move" the itunes files.
Right now i just "copied"  temporarily until I am sure everything works and then I would delete the files form my "C" drive....

If you want to keep the iTunes separate, I'd organize as follows:

MUSIC FOLDER
--  FOLDER FOR EACH ARTIST
------FOLDER FOR EACH ALBUM BY EACH ARTIST

In the MUSIC FOLDER, I'd just create a folder called ITUNES - then follow the same convention below that.  I assume you want to keep it separate for an iPod or whatever but don't listen to those via the SB?  Even if you did, you'd just have to browse 1 more level down and know what is and isn't in the iTunes area.  That would work fine on the external drive.

That is pretty much what I have other than right now I keep my .flac
files outside of my "My Music" folder just to keep the mp3 and flac files separate.
And if that is how I should do it, then I am back to the original problem
with the "windows-no disc" error.
So I need to figure out the paths that i use in the squeezecenter settings;

If I can remember correctly,(I'm not at home right now) where it asks for folders I have    H:\flac
and I think the next line asks for music library and I have   H:\My Music
with H being my external HD that i have copied my files to.
The itunes program still resides in"C" drive with the original mp3's..

Can I configure SC not to look for playlists somewhere??

So I diabled the ituns plugin in the settings and that seems to have taken care of the error message!!

What functionality will I loose by not using the plugin??
What other plugins can/should I disable?
