ps3mediaserver security?
« on: 7 May 2009, 01:22 am »
I looked and didn't see too much on this software. So I thought I would ask here. Hope thats ok.

My question is how secure is software like this?  I wasn't able to find too much information about how it works with the PS3 or how it interfaces, but the idea of my computer possibly being wide open is a bit alarming.  What I have seen says that the PS3 accesses it "automatically" which makes me wonder where the protection is.

Anyone have info on this?

Bump.

I'd like to know as well.
My son like to surf the net via the PS3 on the projection screen.
I do worry about security, so I only let him do it while I can keep an eye on where he's going.

I have done a little poking about on the issue on my own...

From what I have gathered, the security vulnerability lies within the design of UPNP in windows itself, rather than the ps3.  There were patches issued earlier in 2001 on this. But there still seems to be concern that the router with open UPNP is potentially exposed.  Now what does this all mean... I don't know, but I speculate that opening up "all files" not just shared ones is removing some protection of information on your computer -if ps3mediaserver does this?
