AR 90 Speakers-Next move is new footers- Ideas?
« on: 6 May 2009, 03:27 pm »
Some may have seen the post i left over the weekend about the amazing pair of AR 90 speakers i bought at a neighborhood estate sale for 50.00 .Or i will put it another way..."How much are you asking for the speakers ? "............The reply....."25.00 EACH!" I went back the next day and bought the rest of the audio stuff, almost enough to stock a late 70's audio store, and the rest of the records...talking about 70's.....Jean Luc Ponty,Crusaders,Dave Grusin ....tons of fusion...so i got the gear AND the music to go with it....No doubt all spun on his Sony quartz lock TT.  I also got the original owner's reference manual for these AR 90'S,including the receipt-he paid 709.90 for this pair 11/6/80. The manual itself is amazing! 25 pages covering EVERYTHING. A testimonial to the care and pride this company invested in their product. I would like to show this to any number of current speaker makers who charge mega bucks and tell you little about their speakers. My favorite is Sonus Faber....." Our speakers need a good amplifier, consult your technician" .Lots of information on the build quality of the cabinets though.
I loved these AR's from the moment i hooked them up and Monday we hossed them over for a complete refoam job and alignment and a physical. They have been sitting for some 15 years as stands for some godawful busts bought in Majorca...........Getting to the point...The current and original "footers" are simply hard plastic cubes, one of which has already broken. This clearly is an issue i will have to deal with to bring them forward. I will have these speakers back in a week or two and am planning on removing all of the small plastic feet. The speakers will be on hardwood,thin-ish carpet,or even marble slabs depending on where they end up. I am looking at Herbie's big fat dots and some of the other Herbie's stuff. These speakers are 82 lbs. each. Can someone give me some ideas on what might work best?  Get rid of the plastic and rest these tanks on the floor naked?  Thanks for reading and your ideas!
