CD PLAYER COMPARISON
« on: 3 May 2009, 01:38 pm »
I'M CURRENTLY USING A NAD MODEL 542 CD PLAYER, AND HAVE THOUGHTS OF PURCHASING/TRYING-OUT THE MARANTZ MODEL 5003 CD PLAYER. IF ANYONE COULD PROVIDE ME SOME FEEDBACK ON THE 5003 UNIT...I'D APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH.
I'VE ALWAYS USED DENON AND NAD....THE 542 NAD IS A GREAT CD PLAYER FOR THE PRICE..GREAT DETAIL,AND I'M ALSO USING THE B283 TUBE PROCESSOR IN-LINE BEFORE IT ARRIVES AT MY A-34 TUBE AMP. THE DENON DECK MODEL 1520 IS UP FOR SALE(AS PARTS) AS IT NEEDS A NEW LASER...SORTA HATE TO DEPART WITH IT.
GIVE ME A SHOUT!             ALWAYS IN SEARCH OF BETTER SOUND,
                                            FREDERIC MAY 2009

I have a Marantz CD5001, which is the previous model, but I believe that the only differences between the CD5001 and CD5003 are cosmetic.  The inboard DAC, IMO, is not very good.  I purchased the CD5001 to use as a transport, and I haven't had any problems with the unit.  I tried the CD5001's analog output, and I would not recommend the CD5001 as a stand-alone CDP.  If it were me, and I understand that it isn't, I would find a DAC that integrated with the rest of my system and then try an inexpensive CDP or DVP as a transport (but not a extremely cheap DVP with a noisy switching power supply).

Has anyone tried the Onkyo DX 7555 CDP? You will find more information about the CDP which is described as audiophile-grade quality here:

http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=DX-7555&class=Compact%20Disc&p=i

The price seems right! It would be good to hear some feedback of the latest offing from Onkyo.

First: Caps are a Pain! ...and actually harder to read!

Second: I've enjoyed the Marantz models I've listen to.  Also, the 5003 seems cool as it can mute out all of the components that alter the signal. This results in a much cleaner output.

On the cheap, the Oppo 980 is extremely hard to beat ($170 delivered in the U.S.).  Note that it is Stereophile Class C rated.

For more money, Stereophile had a $900 player rated Class A (sorry, can't remember the brand/model, but it might have been a Marantz).  This was particularly impressive when the other Class A players costs several times as much.
