I'm not sure as to the original model, probably 2C or 2Ci. I bought them last fall from the original owner, who had had the front woofer and the midrange replaced... so all drivers are in fine shape. I liked that these speakers produce a lot of sound, and I got a decent good deal on them--so I got them to mod. Selling because I just don't have much use for them.
The modifications:
--Crossover upgrade--big difference!
--Teflon-insulated wire
--Binding posts upgrade
--Damping material on the cabinet
--Remounted the drivers such that there is no longer a mushy layer of gasket material between drivers and cabinet. Instead I put driver gasket material around the outside of the drivers. The effect was to tighten up the bass.
--Removed the grill sock. IMHO, that sock really degraded the mids and highs. (Though granted, removing the sock really degrades the WAF!)
--Removed the bottom plates. To my ears they degraded the sound. (I do still have the plates, so they're included in the sale.)
--Painted the chassis satin black.
Anyway, I think these now sound very good. Bass, mids, and highs are all much improved. Sound is more open.
FWIW, I set the speakers on brass cones I got from Parts Express. Better sound than just plopping them on the floor.
Crossover level controls are great. They really work.
The frequency response spec is down to 28 Hz, and this seems to be accurate. These speakers have some very respectable bass.
