This otherwise unknown 6 second drum loop from The Winstons' 1969 "Amen, Brother" created a seed for lots of music to come.

"This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip."

Thanks for putting this up.  Terrific background, not just about the Amen break, but about sampling music in general.

And being a longtime drum & bass head, this is the break that basically defined the genre.  And while I've heard a lot of other breaks being used well, there's still nothing like a good Amen rinse out.

Very interesting video thanks for posting.

It was also interesting that it is a soul/funk version of a gospel song that I've known for years, having gone to the University of Maryland where when a win was clinched the "Amen" song was played by the pep band and sung by the crowd during the Lefty Driesell era. It started in '69 or '70 when this single was out, so I don't know if it may have had a part in that tradition as well.
