I direct your attention here:http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=20251.msg180018;topicseen#msg180018I still recommend the same ones.In my Air Tight ATC-1 preamp, I am using a pair of Tungsram 12ax7 in the line section, and in the phono section, a single RCA "Command Series" 5751 in the middle position, flanked by a pair of Raytheon (labelled Westinghouse) 5751.The sound with both digital and vinyl sources is devastatingly good at the moment. So much so that I have no inclination to touch anything.....and being a hopelessly addicted roller, that says something! Things really started to gel and get interesting when I inserted the RCA Command 5751. I agree with your comments # (4). It replaced a single Telefunken 12ax7. Despite the acclaim, I have never been a fan of that tube. I don't find them seductive at all. No matter where I use it, it always sounds dry and sterile. Clean yes, but lacking in harmonics, texture, palpability and tonality. No musical "pull".I also highly recommend Baldwin 12ax7 "organ pulls". They give a rich, dense, sweet and always musical sound. Might be too much chocolate for some. All RCA's, particularly 5751, are warm and rich with wonderful tonal density and harmonics, but some can sound slightly veiled and dirty.Just my 2 cents.Enjoy!John
In any event, I'm a big fan of Mullard tubes in general, every type.
My favorite 12ax7 is a 12at7.
Hmmm........I know that 5751 can safely be dropped in for 12ax7 and offer about 30% less gain....but 12at7?!!Is it safe to do this? I've been rolling tubes, and reading audio boards for a long long time, and I've never come across this!Hope it's true...I have a decent stash of NOS 12at7.
It would probably work in most circuits but not in all.
Freo,One of the best 12AX7's ever were the ones made in The Philips Hendon factory here in Adelaide. All those old 3 in 1 console jobs were fitted with them and you still occasionally find NOS. Worth keeping an eye out for them.Cheers,Ian
I have a bunch of 1950s RCAs and Sylvanias + a couple pairs of Raytheons + 1 pr TF smooth plates and 2 prs Siemens 3MBP + some 70s Teslas, all good NOS tubes. I also have a bunch of 60s grey plate Sylvanias pulled from Baldwin Organs. They all have slightly different characteristics, but sound great as driver tubes in my Quick Silver mini-mites.I really don't care for any of the new production models.
