Pass DIY Pearl Phono?
« on: 29 Apr 2009, 07:54 pm »
(I did a search that came up basically empty)

I'm dipping my toe getting back into the vinyl pool and noticed some favorable comments about a DIY Nelson Pass design Pearl phono preamp from a few years ago.  Sounds like a few hundred dollar range for boards and parts and right in my sweet spot.

Can anyone comment from experience with a Pearl phono?  Owned, built, sold?

From what I've read, the Pass kits are great bang for the buck.  A concern I have is they appear to be oriented towards a MM cartridge.  At present I'm leaning towards getting a Denon 103R MC and have read of potential issues of not enough gain.  There were some posts about a MC board mod in Europe that migth solve the low output issues?

It appears Passdiy will be coming out with a new set of boards this summer, eta, tbd.

Thanks,
Kenreau

I am building one now.  I got the kit from Promethius at diyaudio.  I also have the xono mc kit.  Can't comment on sound yet.

sts9fan,
Keep us informed on the build and the final sound result. Is this Promethius of Germany?  He is a great guy.
I also am interested in the results of this kit.

Well, OK ... wait till summer, then!  :thumb:

These new boards may offer more gain (which is what is needed with a LOMC vs. a MM).  But they may not!   :o  In which case you may need a step-up device ... either a step-up transformer or an active "head amp".

Just FYI, I use my own phono stage with both my 0.28mV MC and my 5mV MM.  The only difference is ... with the MC, I have to turn up my preamp volume control to max, for most LPs.   :o  Some LPs are cut a bit low so, really, I'd like some more gain ... others are cut a bit high so that - to keep the same volume level - I have to turn the volume control down a couple of 'clicks'.  But most are fine at my listening level.

With the MM, th evolume control sits at the 'normal' position (relative to CD and/or tuner).  :D

Andy

Sweet.  I just read some of his posts.  I was hoping to find an outlet in the US and did read these were available direct from Pass a while back.

I just did a search for the "xono mc kit" you mentioned and came up empty (kit version).  Can you provide an info link for it?

Looking forward to hearing more about your impressions.

Thanks

I will take a look in a few.  It was also done by Promethius and is linked in the Pearl thread somewhere.

Kenreau,
I have a ZIP file with all the original ONO files if you would like them.
Does MC and MM.
