TLP Volume Potentiometer

Hi Hugh,

Your TLP schematic shows a 100K cermet pot while a 20K pot is offered as a option by Aspen. Are there outside limits to the potentiometer value? In other words could I use a 10K or 50K pot? Also if I wanted to utilize a balance pot should it be a linear taper and of what value?

Thanks again for your help on my previous thread.  :D

I used a DACT 10k stepped in my TLP. Worked fine.

Hi Malcolm,

I appreciate your reply. The reason I ask is because a friend has ALPS 10K, 50K and 100K but no 20K.

Went back to the old forum and was scanning the posts there. It looks as though using a 10K or 50K pot would be fine. Hugh didn't care for the idea of using a 100K pot due a possible noise issue.

Thanks,
Brad

Hi Brad,

Yes, exactly, and my apologies for the conflicting documentation;  I'll amend it right away.

I'm in favour of 10K through 50K.  No lower, and no higher.  In both the TLP and the GK-1 I don't to go below 20K because it's a fair load on the source;  many sources I've tried don't find a 10K load all that easy.  Generally the more expensive CD players will easily pull a 10K load, but a few baulk at it, and this is evident when you listen.

You often find the choice of value is determined by the marketplace.  For example, I couldn't buy the premium Panasonic motorized at less than 50K!!

Cheers,

Hugh

Hi Hugh, Malcolm,

Thank you for your input. Due to my mid-fi cd player I will go with the 50K pot. And Hugh I wasn't throwing stones at your assembly text. If you remember (and obviously I don't expect you to  :) ) my TLP kit was purchased way back on April 22, 02' so my assembly text was quite old. Besides I did not view the information as conflicting. I am certain many revisions have been made since. Your last statement contained the gold nugget I was digging for:

Generally the more expensive CD players will easily pull a 10K load, but a few baulk at it, and this is evident when you listen.

Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas! :xmas:
