Lost one of my jobs today, but Frank still likes me. I will be spending lots more time here at AC so brace yourselves. Also, anybody that needs any CAD work in a non-related field (not competing with AVA), and needs some engineering done, give me a PM. I need some work.

Very sorry to hear that Wayner.
I found myself in the very same boat just a couple weeks ago, so I'm with ya' brother.
Good luck on the job search. If I happen to run across anybody needing CAD work and allows telecommuting, I'll send you a PM.

Hey, maybe we could have a new Circle dedicated to those of us looking for jobs.
That's not funny.  :shake:

Again, good luck. I'll keep you in mind if I see something.

Sorry to hear about your job, Wayner.  I hope it turns around for you soon...   :)

Hopefully some of the stimulus money will make it to your part of town.  If not moved to DC.  The job market is really good here.  Then I could come over and do some listing with you. :D   I hope things turn around quickly.

good luck

You know, those custom protractors must be worth something!

I could use one for each of my TT's (except the ADC you made me).

My numbers are down at work, too...still have a job so I'm lucky. Good luck in your search!

So sorry to hear that you also became reclassified from "indispensable" to "dispensable".

I passed the my one year milestone of being out of work, the week before last.

Best wishes on finding your next job!

Sorry to hear this. I hope your job search is fruitful and short.

Sorry, man.

A Little bit of a headache this morning, but life goes on. I'll have to update my resume' and hit the pavement, tho at 55, I know I will have lots of age discrimination. If I go back to skool, what whould be a good profession? Maybe clown.

Is there any consulting in your field and in your location? I started doing that some 15 years ago and never looked back. At 55 a consultant is considered PRIME - all that experience to bring to the table. Lots of tax breaks too.

Good luck,
Bob

I did do some consulting with a local lighting company between my 2 real jobs at Hubbell and HTI. It was very fun, but paychecks were spotty. You can also find the assholes real quickly as a consultant, because there is always someone that thinks you are threatening their job, and perhaps, rightly so.

I did get a nice severance package, but this is really the first time I was "laid-off". When I worked for Hubbell, they closed the factory and that departure was way less painful. This time, it feels like a divorce. They simply tell you that they don't want you anymore.

The funny thing is, there are very few people on earth that can read ladder logic wiring diagrams for industrial machines and now they only have one designer for the entire company. Lucky him (not).

My company's demise is very reflective of the entire computer industry, which I think is completely in the toilet. The manufacturer isn't making any money (Dell, Apple, Cow), the hard-drive guys aren't making any money and good old Microsoft has cut their own throat with the latest release of Windows. It is interesting that many computer manufacturers are still offering XP instead. I also think the software industry (aside from gaming) is totally in the toilet. Retailers are, I suspect, reeling from the down side of the economy as well.

I also think the governments unemployment numbers are way skewed because I think lots of people (myself included) have just decided to take some time off, or have given up. I for one will not go to the unemployment office, cause I don't need their fucking money and I'm not going to put up with them assholes. I swear everyone at the unemployment office use to work at the department of motor vehicles where they learned their compassion and people skills (NOT).

Wayner :?

BobM

Just a question to be asked, because I don't know the answer, but is there a time limit to file for unemployment? If you don't file within x-weeks can you file later on and collect?

Just asking in case things go on longer than you might anticipate. You might also consider that the government is likely to extend the benefits beyond the usual time period in this economy. Another thing to consider is that your unemployment check is mostly funded by your ex-company, not the government per se. The company pays into it and the more people they let go the more they pay.

Personally, I would put up with a little paperwork grief to get it filed and collect a couple of hundred bucks a week (it's CD and beer money at least). It's pretty seamless and easy once its filed.

good luck,
Bob

It can all be done online in just a few minutes Wayner. I'll be getting $340/week and will be required to contact one perspective employer a week. Bob's correct, it's not payed for by the Feds, it's money from your ex-employers piggy bank. What better way to get back at them by continuing to get paid by them.  aa
Don't forget, they laid YOU off. Not the other way around. They knew all this when they made the decision to boot you.

Bob

Wayner

Perhaps that is a good point. I will go next week and put on a fake smile.

No fake smile needed when you're doing it online.

Bob

BobM

Yeah, you're "required" to contact one perspective employer a week. What a joke, At that rate you'll never get a job. They should make it 1 per day to ensure the unemployed are taking it seriously rather than considering it a free paycheck.

Not you Wayner - I'm talking about the slugs who use the system for what it can give them as a free mealticket, rather than a means to carry over to the next real job.

Boy, this must really vary state-by-state big time.  I was laid off at the end of February and in Pennsyltucky I get $580 a week, plus an additional 25 bucks from the stimulus package.  I get 26 weeks and don't have to contact an employer a week.  I'll also be eligible for up to 30 additional weeks when the 26 weeks run out.  Another "plus" from the stimulus package.

I would rather hire a 55 year old professional than some fast talking 20 something hotshot.

Almost all my work is generated from my website, even my local customers look at my site before making an appointment. One unexpected benefit is that customers already know what I do so I spend less time in meetings and the site weeds out the cheapskates.

You could recycle the unemployment money by hiring a website developer to build or update your site, then work will come to you instead of hitting the pavement. I like the sites mcullinan has built.
