Hooking up a pair of Open Baffle subs
« on: 27 Apr 2009, 05:38 pm »
Danny or Brian,

I am close to moving forward with building a pair of open baffle subs (with two SW-12-16FR drivers per sub) and was looking for some advice on how best to integrate them into my dedicated HT setup.

My room is very long (30'+ in length) and the subs will be located at one end of the room while the gear is literally at the other end.  Both subs would be connected to the LFE out of my Denon 3808CI receiver (via a "Y" cable), but I was wondering if I am better off having a very long single ended ic run from the receiver to the Servo amps (one amp per sub) or if I should have the Servo amps close to the receiver and have long speaker cable runs to the subs?

I am not sure if long speaker cable runs with the Servo amps create any issues or interact differently than a standard amp.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

George

Hi George,

Brian answered me here about max length of run from amp to sub
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=47310.msg424901#msg424901

bottomline -basically up to 20'

Thanks Tony.

Looks like my only choice is to have long, single ended ic runs.

Do these plate amplifiers only accept low level in?  I hope they accept high level as well

George, this is a bit OT, I will break off into another thread if need be.

maybe split the signal at one of the subs instead of off the receiver?

You can use high level inputs or low level inputs.

If using high level inputs be sure to go up in wire gauge as length increases.

Danny,

Why is there a 20' speaker cable limit as per Brian?

I believe that was from the sub amp to the drivers not from the source to the sub amp.

Ok.

So back to my original question...

Would I be better off with long single ended ic or speaker cable runs to the Servo amp from my receiver?

Thanks.

30' isn't that long for a coax cable, why wouldn't you want to run RCA?

Unless you've previously done an OB dual sub setup and you know how it's going to work (not likely, right) you have to expect some trial and error before you find the placement that works best in your space.  So you may want to use whatever cables you have and move the receiver close enough to reach, until you get it right.  Then you'll know how long of a cable you need.

The result of my OB project involved completely rearranging my furniture.

And I'd guess an RCA will work fine even for 30'.

George,

Either way will work fine.
