Felix with a switching or linear PS?
« on: 27 Apr 2009, 12:58 am »
Guys

I want to upgrade the power supply for my transport.  It's current ps is a switcher which I have plugged into a big balanced power transformer.  I have a Felix I built on the 8118 Miller cmc that I would like to use with it (just a "bare" Felix at this point with no case).  I'm thinking I might want to take the current switcher, pull out the innards and put the innards and a Felix in one box.  I can then hard wire the Felix to the ps.  Then I was thinking that maybe I should try out a linear ps while I'm at it and ditch the switcher.

Either way, I'd like to use the Felix.  Any recommendation on which road to head down...switcher or linear with the Felix?

Thanks!

what are you ps specs? and for what specific component?

A switcher pollutes up and downstream
it pollutes the rest of the system via its AC chord and it pollutes the transport
Felix however suppresses the pollution to practically inaudible levels
But then you need 2.
one between wall outlet and switcher and one between switcher and the transport

Guys, the transport in question is a Networked Media Tank called the IoBox.  I use it as a .flac transport (network to SPDIF).  The PS is labeled as a 12V unit max 4amps (waaay overrated as I'm told the IoBox only draws ~10 watts or so...with a max of ~15 watts).  Its got a barrel connector on it.

I only have one Felix together and I don't think I have the parts for another right now...but could think about doing two.   That would mean one on the A/C coming into the PS and then one on the DC coming out, correct?

yes, correct on the DC side which much lower voltages you can use all kind of good sounding "boutique" caps, a

Hey guys

So, I picked up a large Radio Shack project box (8" x 6" x3") as well as some parts for another Felix.  I have one with Auricaps and Jensen Crosscaps that I will use for the DC side.  I will use x-rated caps for the a/c side.

So, inside the box, there will be "naked" switching power supply in between two Felixs.  Both Felixs will use the 8117 cmc.

I think it all should fit ok and will hopefully work ok, too.  I'll report back when I get it together.

My ioBox arrived today. :) I'll be taking some measurements of the current draw so I will have the information I need to build a linear supply. I suspect the addition of a hard drive will push this up and will be different for conventional vs SSD. If I remember I'll let you know what it really draws. Acopian of course has some but they are mighty proud of them.

Jim,

I'll be looking forward to your report. :) I already have a Felix hooked up to the AC side of an Acopian linear power supply which feeds my Bolder SB3. I will be gathering parts for the DC side pending your results.

Mike, great to hear you're giving the ioBox a shot...I think you'll like it!  I'm definitely curious to hear about how much current you measure.  Are you planning on using a hd?  If you have your music collection on your network, I would suggest the CF card solution to load up aps on and then stream your music.

I ordered a 32G SSD, should be here in a few days. I want no spinning discs in my music room and this will be dead silent. I thought about the CF but I like the idea of a SATA drive. For $100 the price was low enough to not be too concerned.

My music is on a server since I've been using a Squeezebox for years. I installed NFS on it tonight and the ioBox sees it, so that is good. It also sees my DVR recordings on the DirecTV box, not that I'll be playing them but they showed up with no configuration, pretty cool. I already had a 14" flat panel TV that wasn't being used, so the display is covered. Now I need to get that Buffalo DAC built. :)

is it to be expected that the iobox will sound better ( in more than one way?) than a properly modded SB3/Duet with Wayne's pws?
