Are Sony DVPS7700's still available new?
« on: 16 Dec 2003, 07:18 pm »
Does anyone know where to get a new Sony DVPS7700 from a reputable source?  I know there have been several that have popped up used.  I searched and found several online stores selling for ~$600 USD but the feedback from these places have not been great--and then there are warranty issues with these guys.  Any other reliable sources that anyone knows of?

Thanks

Why not get a used one on Audiogon or Ebay?

I paid $207 shipped for a mint one on Ebay and it got trashed by our goof friends at UPS  :finger:

I subsequently found one on Audiogon for $250.

I sent my unit to Empirical Audio to be modified by Steve Nugent.  His mods make it an excellent transport and at a really attractive price!

In fact, I am just waiting for the delivery guy (yes it is UPS - will I ever learn?) right now....

I'd love to find one for ~$200-250.  My Pioneer PD75 is dying currently.

I've seen the raves about the Sony DVPS7700 as well as Empirical's

mods.  That would be the direction I would be heading.

The 7700 is a model from about 1998/1999. So I'd imagine finding one NIB would be difficult, if not impossible.

I'd look to finding one on AudiogoN or VideogoN that's complete with box/manual/remote. People that go to the trouble of keeping everything like that usually take good care of their gear. So you should have less problems buying a used deck that's as complete as you can possibly find as finding a new one probably wouldn't be worth the time & effort that'd be required for such a task.

Well UPS didn't wreck this one, so I am looking good!!

The unit looks new and is in excellent shape.  I will put it into the system tomorrow and see how it compares to my Sonic Frontiers SFT-1.

Cheap tweaks to improve your S7700

A cheap tweak to really improve the sound of the S7700 is to dampen it by sticking some Dynamat on the inside of the lid and on all solid surfaces inside the unit. I also placed some EVS cloth on top of the transport. These two tweaks cut out a kind of "ringy" sound caused by internal vibration and static. I also had the stock cord pulled out, better wire put in and an adapter to accept after market power cords. A lot of these modifications are spelled out in detail if you search under 7700 on this site. Good luck, and enjoy the Sony. It's a great transport.

Please post your impressions of the comparison SF SFT-1.

I'd really be interested in how this player may stack up against other dedicated transports in the $300-400 range--Theta's, CAL's, CEC, Parasounds(belt).

Brad,

Since my unit has the mods, the cost for the Sony is around $900 (Sony + Mods from Empirical Audio).

Just wanted to make sure you understood that.

My SFT-1 sold for $3K when it was new.
