Yes:
Steely Dan Aja
Paul Simon Graceland
South Pacific Kiri Ti Kenawa
Various Burt Bacharach tunes original vinyl & CD re-releases

The modifiers of my CDP have leased a Sony DSD console, recorded & released SACDs of their own.  They also own original analog master tapes; their Stones "master" is an earlier generation than what Sony employed in the Stones' SACD collection, 'splaining the Stones SACD not so great sound quality.

Master is a term of art, such being that the word is often ascribed to something not literally the original medium to which the original recording was made, meaning it is apparently acceptable to use the term master on a dub with no known specific generation number.  Funny, is it not?

The quality of the master employed in every CD originally released on vinyl (pre-digital that is) determines very much how the CD will compare to the original vinyl version.

In the above recordings the vinyl blows away the CD, making the CD sound like a caricature.

John did it ever occur to you that the more we publicize the wonderful world of vinyl the more costly & less available is vinyl for us to buy?

So be it, Jim.  The truth is generally immutable and, if not us, someone else will find out and trumpet what a great format it is (and they are)  :thumb:

I have many of my favorites in vinyl, sometimes several different versions of vinyl, CD and even SACD or DVD-A if they are available.

Examples:
Natalie Merchant's Tigerlily - I have it on LP, MFSL Half Speed Mastered GAIN 2™ Ultra Analog 45rpm LP, CD and DVD-A.
Supertramp's Crime of the Century - on LP, MFSL Half Speed Mastered LP, MFSL UHQR LP, CD and remastered CD.
Pink Floyd's DSOTM - LP, MFSL Half Speed Mastered LP, CD, remastered CD and SACD
I have all Sarah McLachlan releases on 180g vinyl and CD.

Many more examples like those above...

Hi

There is one particular Australian song that I sought out from a performer called Daryl Braithwaite who has one of those unique voices.  The song I like is Who Shot the Gun (I think) sung in a falsetto voice and strong bass riff.  The difference in "emotional engagement" and depth of harmonics is just staggering between between the vinyl and digital media, the LP being the winner in this respect.

I don't know if it is the recording engineer's fault or whatever, some of these old recordings are re-released without much effort put into the quality which may be the reason for this I suspect.

Cheers

Add to my list Supertramp Crime of the Century.  On vinyl almost earth shaking in presentation.  CD sounds like a crummy cassette by comparison, almost unlistenable, like elevator music.  Others too but can't think of them now.

Funny regarding "Supertramp": just watched Into the Wild on BluRay/92"/1080p.  (Let's just say I'm not much into theaters any more.)

Yeah, I own a few pairs (at least that's how I voted). I picked up a bunch for a shoot out some years ago, including several CD's burned from the local library to duplicate what I already had on vinyl. I had some fello audiiophiles over to compare CD to vinyl. Interesting results and not as skewed as you might think.

Bottom line - the preference truly depended on the mastering of the music. Sometimes CD won and sometimes vinyl. When the mastering was the same the vinyl tended to win out. I think the split was something like 60% vinyl 40% CD in the end.

I agree with your comments on Crime of the Century.  All the vinyl releases are excellent.  The UHQR copy is the best LP I own, bar none.  The range, dynamics and SNR are truly incredible.  The newly remastered CD is significantly better than the original - it is at least listenable when I don't want to bother with vinyl.

I have a few cross-format pairs, but I try to avoid this if possible.  The worst one I have is Death "Leprosy" (that ubiquitous audiophile staple) where the increase in Ed Repka goodness is inversely proportional to the lousy sound of the vinyl.  If I make the decision to buy something new on vinyl it is with the understanding that it will have to be listened to in that format alone as re-recording to computer seems a bit like work.  If I already have the CD and buy the vinyl copy it is mainly for cover art.

I just got a double LP of Sunn O))) "Dømkirke" which is apparently ONLY released on vinyl and recorded on analog tape.  I haven't listened to it yet, but the concept of a heavy band playing in a medieval cathedral in Norway with a pipe organ is the coolest thing I can think of.  Looking at the photos from this gig that grace the record sleeves, I once again tried to imagine a gig that could be more wicked cool, but nothing doing.

Maybe we can safely assume CD producers believe:
CDs purchased on impulse; buyers care about convenience & little to none about sound quality
CD playback systems are generally so low in quality that it's not worth it to care about the mastering process, esp for re-released old analog sources.  Put another way: For old analog masters re-released into a digital format, the performance quality of the final digital product & the number of potential purchasers concerned w/ such are inversely related; hence the higher the sound quality the lower the profit margin.

certain CDs that i have, i would DEARLY love to have on vinyl.  the first one i got was brothers in arms of which i thought was a reeeeeely good cd, and it was my first.  the LP showed up for a buck in the used bin and BLEW ME AWAY with its superiority even though it has ten less minutes of music on it.

and it not that i was an early adopter and proponent of cd.  i waited a fairly long time befroe i bought the magnavox for $140 at target.  they were being touted as being very good sounding and they were.  it imaged MUCH better than my friend's technics even though the technics had better bass.

rarely does the cd sound better than the vinyl unless the vinyl mastering was poor.  i have a paul horn pair and a michael franks pair that suffer that.

certain ones were only on vinyl at first like the telarc pictures at an exhibition by lorin maazel and the cleveland orch.  when the cd came along, it was clearly inferior, but the sacd is pretty close to the LP.  papa doo ron ron was one i just had to have on vinyl after having the cd a long time.  i shold make an effort to find it so i can make the comparison.  the cd is just fine but i expect the vinyl to at least equal or surpass it.

my latest purchase of new vinyl was dan hicks and his hot licks-tangled tales which was issued with a cd inside the LP jacket.  MUCH better than the dual disc idea.  i accidently bought two from both a local store (origami records in echo park) and for got that one was coming from tower.

at the audio society meeting, i sold the pair, cd to one person and LP to another, both people quite happy.  got what i paid so i am also happy.  no sleeve with the cd so i made one for mine with pics off the net.

here it is, and there is free shipping over $25!  they have other vinyl, and hey, CDs are good too.  i got my dan hicks and his hot licks-tangled tales there INCLUDING cd in the jacket for about $16.  diana krall's new one is there too and cheeeeep for 180 grams.

my only gripe is that raising sand arrived with a bent corner.

Hey!

   I do have a few.

Well, most of them time I would buy the CD version first when it first released thinking that it is unlikely the album will be release on vinyl LP.

Of course not long after they release it on LP!  :duh: And yes I just have to get the vinyl version when I see it! So this is how I ended up with both formats  :icon_lol:

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:
