Tube Amp: 4 Ohms vs. 8 Ohms
« on: 21 Apr 2009, 04:23 pm »
    Hello,

Does anyone using Omega Speakers with a Tube Amp have any preference in the sound of the amp operating in the 4 Ohm or 8 Ohm mode?

                                                                     Thank You

 Zack,

I'm operating my Bipoles in the 16 ohm mode. Louis mentioned that this is better than using 4 ohms. I haven't performed a careful A/B comparison between 4 and 16 ohms but since my amp offers 16 ohm I decided to use this option. Maybe this evening I'll do an A/B and issue a report.

Sure. I have tried Super 3s and the Max Hemps with two different tube amps. Both speakers sound their best on the 8 ohm setting with either amp.

One amp is a single ended 300B, and the other is a single ended EL84.

I also have an old NAD solid state amp with a 4/8 ohm switch. It doesn't seem to matter which setting I use, but sometimes I can convince myself that 8 ohms sounds a little better.

Usually, whichever transformer tap produces the loudest sound or strongest bass at the same volume control setting is the right one to use. If you don't hear any real difference, then just use the 8 ohm tap.
