Other tube types in RM-9?
« on: 18 Apr 2009, 11:59 am »
I tried to get some information in the Tube-O-Phile cirlce and the topic flopped, so I'll try here.

Has anyone rolled in other tube types (6CA7, KT77, KT90, 6550, KT88) into their RM-9?  What are your thoughts?  I have only heard EL34's in mine.  While I like the sound of these tubes quite a bit I'm always curious.

My favorite tube in the RM-9 was the Shuguang KT-66.

Wonder what Roger's take is on that???  8)

I prefer SED 6550s over the EL-34s in my RM-9 MkII

In my RM-9 II, I have used EL34's, 6550's and now the KT88. The El34 were great for the midrange/vocals and good in the high frequency range. they were somewhat lacking on the bottow end. The 6550's were great on the bottom end but lacked the mid-range magic. The KT88 are great on the bottom end, vocals and highs. My KT88's are the Genelex Gold Lion. Only wished I had bought the KT88 first.

I felt the KT-66 had the musicality of the EL34 + much of the power/bigness of the KT88 - a very good combo indeed.   aa

Roger re-tubed my original RM-9 with RAM KT-88s a couple of years ago and I love em. A big step up in dynamics, bass and detail over the EL-34s. Soundstage widened considerably.

Thanks Guys!

I just bought a used octet of KT88s for cheap to try.  Will let you know what I think.

The KT66 sounds quite interesting!  I'll be on the prowl for some of those   :thumb:

Anyone tried 6L6s?  Can it even run 6L6s?

roger once told me that his favorite tube for the RM9's were the siemens EL34's. one must be careful when tube rolling as it weakens the tube sockets on the rm9's. the driver tube sockets are mounted on the pc board and they will work lose with repeated tube changing so be carefull!!!
