Bugle Separate Battery PS Box and Connectors?
« on: 17 Apr 2009, 08:17 pm »
I'm looking to use D batteries for my Bugle (no desire for SLA, and too broke to go for PS kit just yet). I would like to house them in a separate box from the Bugle but still be able to detach the unit if I just want to play around with op amp rolling, etc.

Any ideas as to what kind of connection/wiring I could use between boxes that would allow detachability?

many thanks to Jim btw! Love my bugle! 8)

After you have purchased the "D" batteries, battery holders........etc. you might be better off just buying the bugle power supply. The batteries will have to be replaced eventually. Those batteries are not cheap.

I sell the bugle power supply kit but you don't have to buy it from me. There are other options available to you. You can get the half kit from www.hagtech.com and buy parts from www.digikey.com. Search the internet for other options and deals.

Thanks,
Jack

Thanks Jack. Down the road, that's probably what I will do. First I'd like to see how long the batteries will last. My Vinyl listening averages out to only a few hours per day, so the estimated life of this battery pack should be 7-9 mos. Also, I do like the portability of having a smaller separate enclosure that allows me to disconnect/roll op amps easily 8).

If you go with the D cells, be sure to wire in a nice bright LED on one supply to remind you the Bugle is on. I could have bought a Cornet with the 9V batteries I went through forgetting to turn off my Bugle. Finally I switched to 12V SLA's, mounted both batteries and the bugle in a DirectTV box and wired the power LED and Bugle via a 4PDT switch. This setup is convienent but it's probably not any cheaper or easier than buying the power supply.

How/where do I wire the LED? I have some lying around. Do you have a pic by chance?

Connect a 500-1000 ohm resistor in series with the LED anode (the longer leg) to one batteries positive terminal and connect the LED's cathode to the same batteries negative terminal. You need to make this connection on the load side of the power switch so the LED comes on when the bugle is on and off when it's turned off. This will draw and additional 10-20 milliamps of current which shouldn't be a problem with SLA batteries or the bugle power supply.
