Celebrate International Record Store Day / Saturday April 18, 2009.  Discounts abound at many of your favorite local record retailers!

The original idea for Record Store Day was conceived by Chris Brown, and was founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally.

It's a great idea. Went to Chicago with my 14 year old four weeks ago, went to Dave's Records (All Vinyl, All The Time) and Reckless Records. Bought some great stuff, just drinking in the smell of the store (I know it sounds bad but it's not) is intoxicating to me.

Atomic Records aside (out of business in Milwaukee recently), a lot of the stores remaining today demonstrate the survival of the fittest principle. And some of the stores have new stuff that is sold out on the record label's website, it's delivered product that can only be found in the retail setting (unless you go for eBay, etc).

My nearest store is 100 miles away, so I won't be participating. But even in the day of the internet, there's a role for a good record store, I'm happy to say!

My local joint is 30% :o off that day....I hate crowds so I'll miss it, but I hope he rolls in lotsa' business all the same.

It's a great little shop, with a friendly and helpful proprietor there :thumb:

The place that actually used to sell records here shut down years ago, but I think I may check out another place across town, I haven't checked if they sell LPs or not...

John, thanks for posting this.

I heard KFOG, a local bay area station, play music from vinyl today in honor of the Record Store day-cool. I never listen to that station but I got a ride in today from a coworker.

Where are you again john? might need to head up to SF since my local place is not participating-Record Man.

It was a great day. My daughter and I went to Grand Rapids, a mere hundred miles away, to two record stores. Grabbed a vegan lunch in between stores. The first place, Vertigo Records was HOPPING!! Wall to wall people, people outside, hanging out, people grilling stuff like a tailgate party. Live entertainment, DJ spinning discs, crazy fun.
There was an article about the event in the local paper and the owners were incredibly appreciative and incredulous and overwhelmed at the same time.

The second place, The Corner Record Shop, wasn't as busy but they are more seriously into 45's, jazz, etc.

But we bought stuff at both places, everything on sale, 10 percent off here, a dollar off there.

Hopefully next year will be a repeat. LONG LIVE VINYL.

Went to Tunes in Hoboken.  The radio was advertising the event at Tunes today.  The store was more crowded than usual but not too bad.   Picked up a bunch of LPs both new and used (CDs too).  LPs weren't on sale, only cds and dvds.

I ended up going to Vinyl Solutions in San Mateo (south of SF), CA. They had a good crowd and were giving away free taco and soda coupons for neighboring shops. A bit of live music too. Almost as crowded as orthobiz's place. I'll be going back there.

They had a 10% off coupon of all music for the event. I ended up with 20 vinyl LPs - all used, except a new stock, newer portishead LP. 20 LPs for under $90.

I picked up mostly 80s alternative and pop albums, add nat king cole, the commodores, and stevie wonder in there too. Even most of the LPs at 2.99 were in excellent condition, just dusty with a slightly worn jacket. A couple of 10 cent 45s for fun.  I wish they had a better blues vinyl selection...very limited.

A good saturday!

Went to my local store, Zia Records and they had a bunch of special releases just for Record Store Day and everything was on sale at 10% off. I picked up some new and used vinyl, including the reissue of Miles Davis, In a Silent Way and a used copy of Yes, Tales from Topographic Oceans and a cool MC5 45 with Kick Out the Jams and Motor City is Burning on it. I also picked up the Wilco concert DVD "Ashes of American Flags", which looks very cool. Some of the freebies included a LP from Universal Music called Choice Cuts 2009 featuring a number of cuts from Melody Gardot and John Scofield, among others. All in all, a very nice Record Store Day.

Hey Ed,

Sorry - responded to your post a day late and dollar short

I'm in So. Marin...my local shop is Mill Valley Music - who had 30% off all used and 20% off all new items yesterday for the 'holiday'.

I also found a good shop up in Novato recently called Watts Music.  It was neat, sanely priced and the proprietor there is really pleasant and helpful (Darren I think his name)  :thumb:

Gr8 that you partook in the day....I had a busy Saturday, and detest crowds (unless I have to endure them like at ball games or I if I have to hit the John and pee in a crowded place , etc)
