OB Line Array?
« on: 16 Apr 2009, 10:14 am »
I recall reading about a new OB Line Array Danny was designing in an LS thread at AV123 a few months back (still waiting on my LS9's). Curious if these are still in the works or if there is any info/pics anywhere?

Yeah, everything is place to build out a pair of them ever since last August. I am still waiting on the guy that is building the cabinets to get them finished up. I am hoping that he will have them finished up one of these days.

Speaking of OB speakers, are you still working with MLS to produce the X-Optima?  I was curious because I loved that design and think they would be great with a servo sub.

That design has been on the drawing board for a while now, but has been stalled due to other economic issues and priorities. We may see these speakers later this year though once other issues have been resolved.

On a side note of more importance. Hehe

Whats up with the Super 7 and some other designs on the table at GR?

The Super 7 concept has evolved a little and has also stalled for the same reason as the OB-9. It too may come to happen in a big way, we'll see.

Have you considered this for a kit?

Custom drivers were designed for these and the free air application that they are used in. So if I were to order them and use them in something of my own, it would require that they be produced and purchased 1000 units at a time. Right now I do see myself making that commitment to it. Besides I did that design work for AV123.

Does that translate to:  "No"?

For now, it's a no.

That's cool.

I'm getting ahead of myself anyway.  I want to build six different kits.
The reality is I'm struggling to build just one of them and really don't even have room for the rest of them.

In my mind the OB line array has the potential to be a "Last Speaker Project" kind of speaker.

Very badly. The center to center spacing would cause massive cancellation above 2kHz or so depending on the diameter of the woofer and length of the line.

Wouldn't that driver be incredibly hard to stop causing a lot of unwanted resonance?

Oh and for the original topic at hand... GREAT... I finally get my LS-9's and now there's something better in the works...  :o

Oh well, the non-OB LS-9's will have to do just fine for me.  :D

Yes, the tweeter C-T-C spacing would be terribly l o n g.

would it be be possible to do an OB ls9 line array based on NEO-8  and  M165X?  i know the regular m165x in not totally optimised for normal enclosed line array but i does work in ob pretty good. if you had to oder a truncated frame version, what would be the minimum order you'd have to place? maybe a group buy could be put together to gaurantee you have the funding for a minimum order. i figure there are 16 6.5s per tower so each person would be essentially ordering 32 drivers, minimum order amaount divided by 32 will tell us how many people it will take to do a group buy
