Carlman, do you live anywhere near a Best Buy? If you are willing to put in a little effort with no risk, I recommend auditioning the $175 Yamaha YST-SW205. You can get it for much less, for sure. I have two and got them for $129 each plus shipping.  They work beautifully with my $5k Dynaudio Monitors. Seamless integration, fast, great low frequency extension, and nice and small. Far better than my former Vandersteen. I have two Earthquake Super Nova's ($3400/pr) and two Bag End Infra-18 ($3000/pr). I much prefer the Yamaha's for 2 channel audio. If you don't like it, return it, but I think you will be in for a surprise.

Slow down man.  I know you're anxious about it, but there is nothing that says you HAVE to get a sub before you even settle on the main speakers. . .

FWIW, the BB site is only listing the SW215.  Don't know if it is the same or not.

Kevin just posted this one:

If I needed a sub in that price range, and knowing the size room you have, I would definately research this one.

Hi Doug,
Thanks for the advice, but I think you can get two 205's for around $260 delivered if you shop around.  Also, the new one at Best Buy, the 215 is on sale for $119 delivered.  It appears to be the replacement for the 205.   You can get two of those for the price of a 305.   That might be a good deal.  The new ones are bottom firing and square versus rectangular for the older models.  I'd prefer rectangular because it would go in my bedroom system and I could wedge it between the dresser and the wall or tuck it under something easier.

Jerry knows good sound and has an awesome system.  I trust his judgment.  Will keep everyone posted.

hi j-man,

i agree jerry knows his stuff.  *but* the 305 has two 8" drivers, vs the 205's one 8" driver.  i'd ante up the extra $$$ if i were in the market...  i agree that, if shopping around, ya mite be able to do better on price.

re: the new 215 & its downward-firing sub, i'd prefer a forward-facing driver, for better integration w/monitors in a dedicated audio system...

The only negative was that Hectic-Bob insisted on playing early George Michael/Wham music at very loud volume levels and dancing around the room in a Speedo. Although the sub sounded great, I thought the whole dancing and musical selection was a bit strange...just kidding!

That's too funny (since it actually fits Bob's personality)! :rotflmao: That's a HORRIBLE mental image though. Maybe we need to start including censors and warnings :o :x

i bought my brother a set of rocket tykes for xmas, and yesterday i hooked up the sub to pair it with my Ref 1's (yeah right, like i was going to leave it in the box for two weeks so he could unwrap it). sounds pretty damn good to me. and the tyke system is stupidly good looking for the money, i wish i didn't have to give it to him but that's another matter.

I've decided to get the DIY sub from Kevin when it comes out in a few weeks.  Until then, I'll have some time to get used to the new speakers and make sure they're 'the one'...  (for now)

Thanks,
Carl

Gary, you are following the Tyke story over on the AV123 forum, right?

Carl,
I totally forgot about that sub.  You will be happy with Mark and Co. over at AV123.  He's a first class guy who offers some unbelievable values and knows how to take care of customers.  That sub is very flexible and musical and appears (on paper) to be a good match for the Reference 1's.  I heard it at Hectic-Bob's house and was impressed by how powerful it sounded and by how well it was constructed.  Rumor has it that Mark makes cabinets for some high $$$ companies in the industry.  One look at the ...

Cool Carl, this sub is an excellent performer with both music and HT...I think you will like it...

Jack, All I will say is that is WRONG.....I'll look forward to hearing Boy George at our next listening session! :D
