OB Rules?
« on: 11 Apr 2009, 11:41 pm »
I have recently just finished my first set of OBs.
As with any new speaker we get, we move our listening distance,
the distance between speakers, from back wall, etc.

Is there a rule of thumb when dealing with OBs?
Does the golden triangle still apply?

Do driver size come into play?

Placement guidelines.....

As a newbie, some seasoned info from you guys would be a great asset.

Thanks

I saw you OB at Danny's GRresearch Forum, very nice. I believe those who visit here would like a peep.

As far my OB is concern, I set them at least 6 feet apart, about 3-4 feet from back wall, the speakers must be toe-in about 15-20 deg. Obviously it may vary with your system and subject to your room condition.

Cheers.

Do driver size come into play?

There is a relationship between driver size, baffle width and upper frequency limit. I have tried to explain it here:

You will need a three-way-system to implement those considerations consistantly.

Placement guidelines.....

Every room has it´s own optimum placement. So you will have to try what works best for you. Apart from the good advice given by ttan98 the following considerations could be of help:

http://www.linkwitzlab.com/rooms.htm#D

http://www.linkwitzlab.com/faq.htm#Q31

http://www.cardas.com/content.php?area=insights&content_id=26&pagestring=Room+Setup

Don't forget to try to toe in the drivers almost 45°. The speaker axis' should meet ~1 foot in front of your listening position. There are quite some people who like their dipoles best this way.

Thanks for the great advice.....this is why I came here, I knew you guys would come up with a bunch
of placements I never would of thought of and opinions that I could use to get the most out of my
new OBs.
My intentions were not to come here to post pics, but since I was asked here is a couple.
These really sound different than my arrays........I like them a lot.

Hi gainphile,

I cant take credit for the design, its by Danny at GR Research.
Not sure what you mean by the Apogee, if you are referring to the black speak in the background, thats a Carver Original Amazing.
Those speakers were made in March 1987, and there is nothing wrong with them.....they are just about mint!
I picked those up a few months ago and they are very nice.....2x 30" ribbons per side and 4x 12" open baffle woofers......they sound
beautiful......but they take a big amp to drive them. The new OBs are very efficient at 97db.
I was looking for something for my tube gear.....so the Amazings dont work for me there.
I have an array that is set up in my HT room right now that I use for main music listening. The picture is of my living room, this is just a temp holding area till I get my dedicated 2ch room finished.....end of june I think. When I'm done all my speaks will go there......this will make my wife very happy.

Heres a pics of my arrays

Hi PDR,

Amp for Apogees = GEM.200W.CCS.  Already a proven combination.
I can forward e-mail contact with the owner.

I know they look similar but those are Carver Amazings-Originals. I have Sunfire gear to drive them.

By the way thanks for all the info, It has really helped me in my set-up.
This OB really sounds great, even better after your tips.....lots of tweaking in the placement.
It's been a lot of fun!

The ratio of speaker separation to listening distance should be about 1.14/1.
i.e.:  For a listening distance of 10ft., speaker centers are about 11ft. 5in. apart.

This is what I've found to be optimum and it syncs with the info on the Orion site.

Distance from rear wall: 3-5ft.  What works best for you in your room to tune bass.

*BTW: Once upon a time I owned the Carver Plats and then the Silvers -- very neat speakers!
