Pro-Ject debute II Lacks the Bass?
« on: 9 Apr 2009, 08:26 pm »
Hey!

I own and love my Pro-Ject debute II intro Turntable but I find it lacks the low end my other source has.

My other source is just my computer with the line out...nothing special.

I am  running the TT through a 1970s Radioshack style Phono (I plan to build a Bottlehead seduction)  into a Promiteus TVC. I have also isolated my TT with a very heavy "floating" Sandbox and the Platter is dampened with Dynamat. Pictures of the setup are in my Gallery.

Do you think this lack of Bass is a limitation of the4 INTRO Table or my Phono?
Do you think the bottle head will fill it out?

What happened to the pro-ject phono amp in your pic? did that lack bass too?

What cartridge are you using?

Is it ultimate volume you lack or simply low end lacking?

I'd suspect your RatShack phono stage does not have enough gain for your system...as your line preamp is not 'active'. I'd suspect it's not your Pro-ject table solely the cause.

The linestage in most active preamps add 9-21 db additional gain to your phono's (typical) 35-42 db.

Even with the highest voltage cartridges out there, 5mv and up, you may not have enough juice to goose

Ed/low.pfile's questions is apt tho...what cartridge do you use?

That is actually a Project Speedbox not the project Phono Box. I want to go Tube for my Phono. I figure the bottlehead Seduction is a nice piece of gear for the money. Plus I love the fact that I will build it. I am using the Cart that came with The Debut II the Ortofon OM 5E. I have another Rat Shack type Phono, I will compare them.to see which one is worse....lol

Thanks for the responses, I have a feeling it is the Phono as well......I just hope it is not a limitation of the Table :duh:

The phono preamp is to inversely replicate the RIAA curve for low frequency responce of all RIAA equalized records (which most are). If it is not doing a good job of faithfully replenishing the curve of it's original values, the playback will suffer.

Several other questions come to mind and some are simple (or silly) but need to be asked.

1) Do you have the cartridge wired correctly? Red wire is Right positive, green wire is Right negative, White is left Positive, blue is left negative. If you have 2 of these wires reversed, you would be out of phase and the left woofer would be going inward, while the right woofer is going outward, cancelling your bass response.

2. Are you tracking at the proper VTF (vertical tracking force) your cartridge will have a recommended weight (in grams) and hopefully you have taken care of this part during your set-up.

3. Have you (or can you) adjust your VTA (vertical tracking angle)? The arm with the stylus on the record should be parallel to the record surface. If the pivot end is too high, the recording can sound brite and shrilly. If the pivot end is too low, it will sound clouded and muddy.

That's enough to get you going for awhile.

You make a good point about the RIAA curve. Since your other points have been taken care of and are maintained I am leaning more more toward the Phono Pre
