Coffee table bass trap?
« on: 4 Apr 2009, 04:48 pm »
Does anyone have an idea for a coffee table bass trap?  I have (6) 2" OC 703 panels left over from making my bass traps and broadband acoustic panels, and I thought that a coffee table bass trap might be a good use for the panels.  I wonder if a fabric-covered fiberglass-filled frame with a table top would be effective.  I don't know what  size the coffee table would need to be to be effective as a bass trap.  Any suggestions?

With bass traps, larger is always better. But bass traps also need to go in specific places - usually corners - so a coffee table out in the room will not do much even if it's large and made from appropriate materials.

Ethan:

Thank you.  That's good to know. When I saw photos of some side table bass traps, I thought about a coffee table bass trap, but as you indicated, a coffee table bass trap would be in the middle of the room.

Actually, while it may not be in the optimal place for frequency related issues, it still will provide some bass absorption that can help with decay times.

The dimensions of the "block" of OC 703, which would be attached to the bottom of the solid top of the coffee table and suspended two inches above the floor, would be either 44"WX22"DX14"H or 32"WX22"DX14"H.  The "block" would be encased in chicken wire or supported with some other type of frame and covered in fabric.  Otherwise, the "block" would be open on every side except the top.  I don't know if the 14" height would provide enough absorption to help with decay times.
