Jantzen Caps Too Large to Solder Bugle?
« on: 4 Apr 2009, 08:06 am »
I ordered 4 .22 Jantzen Z-Superior caps for the Bugle. Unfortunately, I did not realize that the leads were so wide  :duh:. Too wide to go through the holes in the pcb. Is this a no-go? Do the leads have to go through the hole to be effective after soldering? Or Can I solder the leads to the top? Hate to have to send these back

thanks

you can:

1. shave the leads and thin them enough to fit
2. clip the leads and use smaller gauge wire for hookup

Ok, so when you say clip the leads, etc., do you mean shorten them and then solder/attach smaller gauge leads to them?

Yes.
you can take a solid core hookup wire, solder it to the spot, run it up to where the short leads are and solder them together.

Similar to what you see below but you can makes your prettier.
The Blackgate leads would not fit in the hole so I used old leads from other caps which I saved.
Riken a Jupiter caps have very savable leads.

Thanks OMalley, that's what I thought but wanted to be sure...

You could also leave the existing cap leads soldered to the board and clip them off an inch or so back and solder the shortened Jantzen leads to them. That would be the easiest IMO.
By the way, I think you'll like the Z-Superior's. I know I do.

thanks marc. I shortened the leads and then shaved them, so I got 'em in okay. Bugle sounds might sweet so far! :inlove:

Give 'em 25 hours or so, (I've found that they don't take long to establish).
