4B NRB questions
« on: 3 Apr 2009, 07:08 pm »
Hi all, I am new to this forum.

I am looking at buying a used 4B NRB, new to Bryston but very aware of it being known for high quality gear.

I currently have an Emotiva MPS-1 200 wpc 5 channel amp that I am very happy with for the most part. My room is 23x13x8 and sound studio like insulation..i.e. no drywall, just heavy fabric over insulation which causes alot of suckout. I run Rocket 850's for the mains, 91.5 db efficient and quite a large speaker. When being pushed hard, the soft clip limiters on the MPS-1 will kick the L or R main channels into protection mode and recently I blew an internal fuse. The amp is on a dedicated 15amp circuit.

I am looking for a good 2 channel amp with TONS of grunt and lots of headroom that will not be pushed to clipping and still sound excellent when being pushed hard. I don't mean insane Spl's but sometimes I like to play it loud and hard.

Will the NRB fit the bill?

Serial number is 441569, can anyone confirm its a 1994 model by this?

Assumimg good condition, what would be a fair price in CAD$

Thank you very much in advance.

Chris

Welcome to the forum Chris:

Sorry I am late responding. If you want to look up the date/info on an
amp I believe that you can still e-mail the serial number to Bryston.

The 4B-NRB goes for around $850. You might want to look at a 9B-ST/SST and then
you can drive all 5 channels. With your efficient speakers, I would guess that even a
3B-ST/SST would drive them as well. The 4B-NRB should have plenty of grunt to drive your
speakers.

Other posters could probably weigh in on this, but perhaps the 15 amp circuit is not
enough for your 5x200 on transients and is causing your current amp to clip ?

I think there is also a date code near the serial # that you might need.

Hi Chris,

The NRB would be fine but if you can stretch it I'd hold off for an ST, reason being if you're playing loud and you're source is mostly digital the ST would be easier on the ears because of the lower distortion levels, the SST would be ideal but lets not get carried away.

You might try Canuck Audio Mart for listings.  I don't know what the exchange rate is and I may be way off base but maybe $1100 - $1200 US$ for a nice 4B ST.

Thanks very much guys for all the replys here....hmmm, what to do?

In regards to the 15amp circuit, would it be possible for too much draw to cause one or two channels to clip? I would have thought the circuit breaker would pop if it was being overloaded.

I am pretty sure that its the built in "soft clip limiters" that are causing the problem but not really sure.

Anywho, I think a nice dedicated 2 channel amp would be fun to add to the mix so the search goes on...it will be a 4B of some form though.

Cheers to all and thank you!

Chris
