$335 would be a very good deal. Walmart.com has it for $400

If it is from Amazon then it should be reputable.

Certianlly a nice find, given the number of 'Technics Tweekers' on this board one would be hard pressed to do better for the $$ spent.

Very good deal. I paid $400.00 a couple years ago and haven't seen one under $400.00 anywhere since. There are "grey market" models out there that can be identified by a voltage selection switch under the platter. If you get one of these, or if Ritz Camera isn't an authorized dealer... you'd have no warranty. Even if that were the case, it would be unlikely a 1200 would give you any trouble for a good, long time.

Amazon has the lowest price I could find on the SL-1200mkII. I'm getting back into vinyl and wanted a good quality TT for a reasonable price. The Technics SL-1200mkII fit my needs perfectly. I also ordered the Audio Technica AT-440mla cartridge from LP Gear. The only thing I'm still considering is a good phono preamp and I'm leaning towards the Bellari VP130.

Just a bit of warning, I had a recent VP129 for a while and had lots of rf interference problems. I sent it to bellari and they said that nothing was wrong. Apparently, I live to close to a power transformer/power lines. So please beware. I tried it at three friends houses and it worked fine at one and picked up am at the other two. It is also very finicky with placement. That said it sounded nice with no rf.

I also ordered some of the AT cartridges from LPgear.

I'm setting up a second table for myself (soon!!) and I went with a used phono preamp off audiogon...
rather than take a chance on a used stylus with who-knows-how-many-hours or a DD turntable that was
used in a smoke-filled club for scratching, the used phono seemed like a good idea. I'm happy with my R20
Primare at 1/2 off.

Thanks for the tip. I decided against the Bellari and went with the Audio-Technica PEQ3. The last thing I need is hum and/or interference issues. The AT seems like a good solid performer at a very reasonable price. It's been a long time I can't wait to start spinning vinyl again. :P

BTW - Amazon has raised the price on the Technics SL-1200mkII to $382. Glad I ordered my before the price increase. :D

start hitting the hockshops. I see them all the time for less than a hundred dollars (SL1200), and have seen many for $35 or less. If you want to mod one this is the wat to go.

Re: Good Deal on SL-1200MKII? or a SP 10?

I'm planning to get my teen son into vinyl (his request, God bless him...) and thought taking on one of the Technics tables as a project with some mods/upgrades to it for fun.  I have been skimming info and had kind of settled on the 1200 but also see favorable things about the SP 10.  Is there a concensus that one is more suitable over the other as a project to optimize?  I have built amps, speakers and have most of the DIY skills.

Just read up on the Soundhifi.com upgrades that seem right in line with my game plan.

Fwiw, I plan to eventually use an aftermarket tone arm (ie Terminator 3)

Thx,
Kenreau

I received my Technics SL-1200mkII and I'm very impressed with the build quality. I'm still waiting on my AT-440MLa cartridge and preamp so I haven't had a chance to spin any vinyl yet. I don't know if I will be modding or upgrading the tone arm but I'm open to any suggestions.

kenreau, the sp10 is recognized as technics' best deck.  i would heartily recommend it, especially if you are wanting an aftermarket arm - it is set up to take any arm, unlike the sl1200 which needs special mounting plates for other arms.  only problem, is you may not wanna let your son have it.

lonewolf - that's a most excellent avatar you got, there!   :green:

Thanks,  I'll start looking into the sp 10 model also.  Maybe a stock oem 1200  for him and a tricked out '10 for me.

You can visit kabusa. He sells all sorts of them with and without upgrades, but it looks like he charges way more than amazon.
