Configure VNC
« on: 28 Mar 2009, 05:46 pm »
It is likely something simple...

I have free VNC installed on 2 machines.  I want to use my laptop to remotely view a headless desktop.  I currently have a head and keyboard etc on the desktop.

I can request FROM the desktop, and then view the desktop on the laptop.
I cannot request from the laptop and view the desktop.

I need to be able to do the latter, and doing it the way it is setup now makes so sense to have a headless PC if you need a head to view it!

I cannot ping any of the IP's on my wireless LAN from the laptop, but can ping the router.

Hi Mark,
I use to use VNC but it has been so long ago I am of no help with your actual question.  However, I wanted to mention that if you are using XP machines you can use remote desktop which I have found to be far superior to VNC.  My $.02 FWIW.

Best,
Ed

edit:
I believe remote desktop is only available on XP Pro, not Home.  If somone knows this to be incorrect please chime in.

I have XP Pro running on the machine that will be headless - do I need both/all machines that will control the headless one to also be XP Pro?

I can do that, as 2 of the other 3 PC's in the house are XP Pro, but the business machine is Vista.

I will Google how to use remote desktop for XP Pro, thanks for the idea.

Mark,
Sounds like you have what you need to make it work.  I don't like using passwords when going between my networked machines at home, there is a workaround that I pulled off of Microsoft's website a number of years ago that allows you to use remote desktop without passwords.  If this is something you are interested in let me know, I will dig it up, scan it and send it to you.  It is not too involved, pretty simple to incorporate.

Best,
Ed

I was just playing around with this, and it can work, but it is the p/w issue that was holding me back!

If I setup a userid with p/w for the times I want to connect remotely, it means that I HAVE to connect remotely even to boot the machine headlessly...

If you wouldn't mind scanning that, I would love it.

Mark, I have scanned the documents (4 pages).  It is done with 2 steps.  PM me with an email address and I will send them to you.

Ed

edit: I have uploaded the pages to my gallery.  If you can read them great!  If not, PM me with an email address and I will send them to you.  Here they are:

Got it thanks!

I have successfully remote accessed the PC when it is upstairs, and wired to my router.

Now I need to get the SB3 functioning as a bridge, to allow other devices to remotely attach to the PC wired to the SB3.

I have posted a question on the Squeezecenter forum, asking if this is possible.

Great!  Reading your post on the SB3 as a wireless bridge it sounds like you have that issue worked out as well. Enjoy!

I did indeed get it all working great, using XP Pro's ability to allow for remote desktop control, and the wireless bridging abilities of the SB3.

Thanks for your help!

Of course, now that I have done it, I will be assisting my best friend Thursday night, as we setup a PC attached to his TV, to be a headless HTPC.  Well, it will have the TV as the monitor, so perhaps headless is not right, but he will have the ability to remotely access it for admin work, there won't always be a keyboard attached etc.
