Servo/OB questions
« on: 22 Mar 2009, 11:28 pm »
Hey all, first post here.  I've been doing a lot of reading on the Servo subs and had a couple questions.  I currently have an SVS PCUltra 13.  I'm about 70% theater, 30% music.  But I like my music to be good when I listen :)  The SVS is a great sub and has a visceral punch to it without a doubt, but I feel like there's something missing.  It just doesn't sound quite right to me, especially with music.  I've played with room treatments, placement, equilization... nothing's done it for me.  So I started reading about the servo subs and OB designs.  So here's my questions...

1) I've read Danny comparing the PC13 and a servo sub as the difference between a bus and a porsche.  Both can go fast, but only one can stop fast.  I get that, but I wonder about the visceral impact of the servo subs.  If I have dual drivers in the W OB shape, will two of those (so 4 drivers) provide me with something similar?

2) If I go with dual OB subs, should I colocate them or do they need to be separated?  Because of my room shape colocation is a piece of cake.  Not so much if I separate.

3) How directional are they?  They would sit at about a 45d angle from my seating if colocated.

Thanks, and I look forward to learning more.

As for question #1: They will have all the impact that you are looking for and then some.

As for question #2: You can put the group together or separate them and either way will work well.

As for question #3: You need for them to face you if they are in an open baffle. At 90 degrees off axis they cancel each other out and the closer you get to that axis the less the impact.

Thanks Danny, I'll likely give you guys a call today :).  Other than the cabinets, the drivers, and the amps what other bits and pieces do I need?

Well, had a great conversation with Eric and the end result is I'm going to go with a dual driver sandbox setup instead.  I want OB pretty badly, but I just can't make it work right now in my room.  Some day! :)

 Yeah, I have been trying to figure out a way to do OB for awhile and was worried about your 45 degree off axis. I am going to end up with the dual driver sandbox too. :thumb:
Hopefully, we will get some box plans for that soon. :)

Are you going opposing drivers or side by side?

I'm having Eric build me a flat pack for it.  Guess I should ask him :)
